Ordered 1712 and 8790/New Gaming Chair - Page 3

A reclining type chair sounds good. One is made in GB with controls for everything including massaging the back and legs, adjustable lumbar support, etc. .....all for around USD $5k. For the ultimate gamer I need a 24" flat screen with FireGL-256 pc express technology driving the video. Dual scsi 250Gb 10k drives, 80G PuRam system brick with the latest in CPU technology. All the hardware should be stuffed out of sight. A keyboard for access but I want a joystick like that in the Apache. Keyboards don't make for good game play. My left hand needs a similiar control and a smaller keyboard for specific commands. The chair should be like a cockpit, a sort of an egg that allows for two lcd screens to be mounted on the left and the right for telephone and security and for maps and other infomation with the appropriate controls. I'd put the width about 1 meter across. I want a control for each foot. The chair must have air cooling. It must rumble with the bass. It must be controllable for reclining, for leg support and must swivel so you can get in and out easily. Above I want subdued lighting options so that the correct ambiance can be achieved. Speakers above, below, behind and in front. The chair needs a/v controls and I want voice recognition software that can be programmed for using the phone or other chores.

Ok, enough of dreaming. I did see a BMW leather seat converted into a nifty unit. All the controls such as up, down, forward, back recline etc. That could do for now.

ok...give me a bit, i am jammed with this and some other contracts for the next couple days. also, there are a few items we need to throw in a patent first, i have some really interesting design ideas though. i can begin posting them in about a week. idealy i would like to gather the info off this thread next week to anylize it and see how it fits in our current ideas and schematics, see what needs to be intergrated and then release some preliminary drawings here and in other places for feedback. also, thank you to everyone who shared their ideas to date, please keep them coming, if you dont see it in this thread and think it would be an easy intergration, post it here for feedback! thanks again!

The 8890 16" (not 16'. Although, wouldn't we all adore a 16' display?) has been available in two different resolutions : the SXGA display, and the UXGA display. Each variety was manufactured by a different company; Sharp and Hitachi with regard to the SXGA and UXGA, repectively. The SXGA display was the original screen to be offered, and has since become discontinued, at least for the time being it appears. The SXGA display - as you can read about in other threads - appears to have a few cases of banding to the point of extreme in a few cases (read about poor MagicRobin in his thread here). One user (aussie) however could most likely write a sonnet about how perfect his display is. The case would seem to be a case of YMMV. At this point in time, the SXGA seems to not be much of an option at this point in time, save a very rare case from a few select vendors. Another user (forgive me for failing to recall which) mentioned "end of production", and that would appear to be the case.

The UXGA display appears to be the only 16" variety currently available in the 8890. I personally own this screen, and can attest it has no banding issues or - in my case - morbid pixels, for that matter. It is clear, crisp, and (with a few gamma, brightness, and contrast correction via the ATI control panel) beautiful. Other users have complained of ghosting issues, but I have yet to experience any first hand.

Do hope this helps.

no, actually the chair is already designed...i was just doing it to see how well our/my ideas fit in with the norm. trust me, the last thing i would do is completely rely on someone i dont know for information like that. it is simply for my interest and to see if anyone hits on the stuff that is being incorporated into the chair.

btw...if you think building something is easy, i would invite you to try manufacturing something on your own. my brain is way ahead of copying ideas jeff. everythign listed here is common.

also, received the first computer, the acer, and boy, is it big. real big. screen was perfect and beautiful. i was running burn in and wasnt paying attention and ran the battery down for conditioning at the same time. now i get a blue screen start up, i saw a thread here about it but if anyone remembers where to find it, please let me know. something about recharging the battery to full again, which i am doing. for what i saw of it so far though, i was impressed.

soon as i get it back up and run some benchmarks, i will post them here for comparison. the 8790 will be here this week also.

Designed where, in your mind? Dont get me wrong - I wouldnt mind contributing ideas for a cool new computer chair. It just sounds like you are fishing for ideas, then testing the market concept. I mean, didnt you say this earlier in this thread? "right in mind with what we were starting with." If you're just getting going, and all this is on paper, or in your head, fine - just say so.

Building something in your head is easy - you dont have to invite me into the manufacturing fray, ive been there. CNC, cast iron, hand fabircating, you name it.

**shrugs** I have built many things in my head over the past... Then drew them, and then built them...

ok, i re-installed the os on the acer and its fine. i am cycling the battery now, and wanted to post some better first impressions since i got that glitch fixed.

ACER 1712
3.0 P4N
2g ram
17" sxga
120 gig 7200
simpletek 120 external
happauge tv/fm tuner
port replicator
car jack
creative notebook cam
targus delux bag
3 year ext war/2nd busday

OVERALL:

packing: ahh, ok. cdw cheap ass boxes. external drive was scratched. acer box was good.

size: that was shocking. huge. this thing is huge. i measured it out first, but when you see it first hand...

screen: i got a perfect screen, no dead pixels. screen is very, very clear and well lit all over...no gray or dark areas. no banding as far as i can see. it really impressed me, i was not expecting it to be so clear or bright. it does go dim when on battery however, only slightly. i think that has something to do with the battery setting on the go5700 card.

buttons: they are strange. the right shift key is shrunk to nothing. a very, very slight amount of keyboard flex. it is nice having the full keyboard however. board itself seems placed a little too forward considering the size. upon opening the laptop, i saw why immediately...

internals: all desktop stuff, its great! well laid out on the inside. wiring is neat, and overall a very clean layout and none of the scratches i have seen before in other laptops components, everything gleams. bs ram, needs to upgraded.

fans and heat: not loud at all except in turbo mode, which sounds a little like a mini jet engine. does not cycle into that mode unless running a burn in, so i assume it would only come on during hardcore gaming, but even then, its not very loud and it does sound cool. machine does not get very hot. even during burn in, i only noticed a small amount of heat under right wristpad, but it also has a 120gig 7200 rpm under there. during burn in, a little warm air from the side vents, not horrible at all. note: after having it run at speed for a while, it does get a little warm, not uncomfortable though.

sound: quality: excellent loudness: acceptable, volume could go up another notch. i have it playing in the other room though and can hear it pretty good, so i have really no complaints. great eq. great 3d sound effect.

battery: with the exception of the shrunken keys above, this is my one big gripe. you have to take off the whole bottom plate and unscrew the battery to get it out. total of 14 screws. they also give you fake battery compartment so you can take the battery out and still maintain case intergrity, as in total desktop mode. kind of stupid all around in my op.

overall layout: i like the legs...the back sits up off the desk over 1/2". good instructions, you can upgrade everything easily, including the processor. this is a true "desknote"!!! powerful and somewhat portable, in that order. i wounld not have bought this if i travelled everyday.

wi-fi: worked on start up.

btw, cdw sucks!!! first to note, my external has scratches on it from very poor packaging. it looks like it was used and i might return it after i check to see if it didnt belong to a bank...j/k. as for the sale, first they charged my card before i finished ordering (had to call back) and it made my card get declined, wtf??? Spent 2 hours with the bank on that one. then, when i thought i had to rma because of bsod, they hung up on me 3 times before i threatend to cancel my charge and they agreed to return it, my "sales rep" who instantly provided his supervisor 5 days ago when the previous girl ran my card without authorization, (he wanted the sale) today would not put his supervisor on. i kept him on the line and secrectly called back cdw, pushed 0, finally got a suprvisor, and conferenced the call back in, dude was in shock and got all pissy about the return, finally sounding like he wanted to cry. he actually said, "if thats what you want to do, then do it" and hung up, wtf??? ohh boy, but since the fresh install, it has been fine. i think the problem was my fault for runnning a burn in and cycle the battery down fast to 0% the computer is great, cdw, thumbs DOWN! i would not recommend this company for a purchase. (they were the only ones that had stock). however, i did get a sweet deal on everything because of their screwups. everything was 2500.00. that is the only reason i kept it, plus the flawless screen. all in all, it is 8.5 out of 10 so far. the shift button was a blunder. cdw...bah! just another one of those f'in companies to avoid, i have the sager coming though...all around, this was an ok deal with headaches, i just hope without believing it is the last of them. i have to say, pctorque/sager support is hands down the best available. i would have bought this form them had i known they were an acer reseller beforehand, without a second thought.

i will run some benchmarks next. did i tel you this thing was big? i can see the screen clearly across the room. it could easily double for a small tv in a decent size room. and did i say it was perfect?

so far...

next up...8790.

i did all the component work on the original ab roller, hold the original patent on the cd scratch remover, hold all international pct patents on vibrating body jewlery, flavored body jewelry and light up lollipops. also have 2 new products in prototyping stage, plus the design work i am doing on the gaming chair. i also have 17 other patents pending and a portfolio of over 1200 unique ideas and mass marketing plans. almost had the lighted sneakers but was beat to the patent punch by 42 days. we are an idea engine, i am an idea man. all of our stuff is for the mass market. and we dont keep any of it online, for you would be hackers, haha.

email me with something i can look at kesh. we actually have a new one that was almost ready to go up but i would check it out. by the way, are you amish or something? i didnt think they had computers. j/k

also, i will post the results of both the tweaked acer (and sager as soon as it arrives) here for anyone that was interested in a comparison.

also, this one is going to sound stupid, but does anyone know the easiest way to transfer large hd's between towers? i usuallly just do it by cd, but it is a full 120 and 80g in one tower going into a 350g in a separate tower. can i just connect them by ethernet or usb? or can i plug them into my router and do it that way? anyone that could spell it out, i know autocad, adobe, paint shop, im not really proficient at networking beyond my wi-fi. and thank you in advance.
Do you want to transfer the HDs or the information on the HDs? And do both have OS's on them? Or are they storage-only?

For WizzerToys

A VERY IMPORTANT THING TO TEST AND TO KNOW !!!!!! :

In no where in the world is written if the 1712 motherboard/bios is actually error free to use the max HD of ATA100.

For me, I want add the Western Digital 250GB to this Acer, but I do not want know too late that the bios of the motherboard see only max 135 GB like some older bios version do.

So PLEASE , can you see in some ways if the bios is able to see ALL the 250GB of an ATA100 HD ??

This thing can give many problems to people like me that want upgrade the standard components of 1712, and you now are the ONLY person that can resolve this very big doubt for all of us.

THANKS 250Giga TIMES !!!

Shaolin, email Adam@PCTorque and he should be able to give you an answer. He sells these units.

250 gig hd

Hey, Shaolin even if the 1712 can't read all of the 250 gigs you can always partition it in a machine that can read the full size. I did this at work with a 250 gig and put it into an old p3 500mhz and it works fine.
so you are telling me to (if 1712 does not see all the 250GB) :

- place the hd in a pc that can read it all (not mine, is a k6 233mhz ata33...)
- does n partitions of max 135GB each
- place the pre-partitioned HD in the 1712, so I can see all the space but not all together, max 135 GB for partition.

Right ? I have understand well ?

It is a method, but I hope that the all 250GB are usable together to simplify future modifies.

Adam, I hope in a your positive and optimistic answer about it .....
