Asus Z71V CPU upgrade (?)

Thread Starter
Hey all,

Thanks for all of the resources on this website. I've read through it a lot and it influenced my decision to buy an Asus Z71V.

So far, I'm loving the laptop.

I've been considering upgrades wherever possible and have already done some such as add some more memory and a hard drive with more space.
Here is what the laptop looks like now:

1.7Ghz Pentium M, overclocked to 2.2Ghz.
Nvidia Geforce Go 6600
2GB of DDR2 RAM
Windows XP Professional
100 GB SATA hard drive, 7200RPM

What I'm thinking about doing now is upgrading the CPU. However, I don't know where to start studying or what to look for. If any of you know of any links to something that could help me, that be helpful. Mostly I'm curious about compatibility. I'm guessing that a 64bit processor upgrade is not possible on a laptop motherboard designed for a 32 bit processor??? Am I totally off... what are the compatibility issues I should know about? Any suggestions as to a processor upgrade (if there is even one that is compatible and better than what I already have.)

By the way... I pretty much gave up on upgrading the graphics card. However, I've found that the 6600 will run the most recent games on high graphics anyway (but not ultra high), and I'm really happy with it now. Here is a discussion I started on that if anybody is interested:

And here is a walk through on upgrading the Z71V, for anybody who might find it useful:

However, it didn't quite answer my question about a processor in the context of 2007.

Thanks!

Add more RAM or HD and don't bother upgrade CPU, it's not worth it.
Intel PM 780 2.26 GHz 533MHz FSB is the highest you can go.

and you've got your CPU running at that speed anyway! The only way to make it faster is to get a really good overclocking 745 (1.8 Ghz, 400 Mhz FSB) and use the dipswitch to clock it at 2.4 Ghz.

Interesting..over 2 years after Z71 being released, people still buy them....

So why the heck does Asus not release stuff for it..
