Next Gen Macbook, worth the wait?

Thread Starter
hello.

I'm currently considering buying a new laptop and I wanted to use this laptop mainly for schoolwork (The current laptop i have now is a desktop replacement and i use it for heavy gaming) I need something nice small and portable. I'm in no real rush so i'm obviously waiting for leopard.
my questions are:

How recently did this generation of macbook come out, and is it worth waiting for the next generation of macbooks because I hear this generation has a few problems with heat issues, design flaws, etc.

How much truth does this article hold about the quality of macbooks? It worries me a little... http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/laptops/m...ies-246695.php

Does windows run well with the dual boot programs (i.e. boot camp, parallels)

There are rumors that apple plans to release a 12" macbook, and a 13" macbook pro... any confirmations or speculations about that?

I hear the white is really hard to maintain because people have complained that the keyboard will get dirty overtime and the wristpads get discolored due to heat. On top of that I also hear that the letters on they keyboards fade off easily.

I think that's all i have for now, if i have anymore questions i'll post em up.

Thanks all!

There's no telling when—or what—Apple is going to release anything.

New MacBooks could come out tomorrow or they could come out three months from now.

There's a big rumour going around about Apple releasing new stuff during NAB which is the 14th to the 19th of next month. Other than that the next big thing that they would use to announce new products would be WWDC in June.

I really don't personally believe apple is going to release any substantial upgrade to the macbook/pro. There's just not much they can do without moving chips, which have recently been updated.

Personally I don't see a need to wait as the machines are already screaming fast and at most any increase would likely be <5% even with a chip change based on similar architecture.

Apple has this thing about them I've studied their previous product releases and every release is something that has a "heavy" demand. I think apple is much more conservative on their updates and will only upgrade something if they feel there is a good chance it will be highly profitable. So with that said we maybe waiting 6 months for a big Design jump of the macbooks/pros

with that said get one now, waiting for the newest release isn't really feesable unless you have a system your using now and dont mind waiting an undetermined amount of time. get your mac for the long haul.

We don't know if Apple is going to release anything new. Like Kakaze said, it could be tomorrow or it could be in 6 months. And I've never heard about that problem, me thinks its not true

I'm waiting for Santa Rosa before picking up a MacBook. Based on a May launch for Santa Rosa (and Apple's close partnership with Intel these days) new models should come midyear. I imagine the Pros will be updated first though, as not to cannibalize sales on the high end. I'd buy a Macbook now if it weren't for the fact that, IMO, Leopard and hybrid HDs/Robson or whatever they implement will be a sizable improvement to an already good laptop. I have several friends who have Macbooks and none of them have heat issues. Discoloration does occur though. I've noticed it on the palm rests as well as touchpad button. No wearing of the letters on the keyboard though.

I've never seen anything like those pictures shown at Gizmodo in real life. Then again, I've only carefully looked at ~10 MacBooks.

my friends macbook has serious staining on the ouside LCD panel (part with the apple logo) looks like the ribs on alienware laptops, only an orange color + trackpad + palmrests .. has has had the case replaced twice.. turned out it wasn't humidity damage, as it has started to come back again for the 3rd time, and he hasn't taken showers with it since the last time he had the case replaced (i keep telling him to read the part of the manual with the operating conditions listed .. im sure it mentions condensing humidity as a bad thing)

Its definately worth the wait IMO. I mean if it just Leopard was coming out, then you could buy a Macbook right now. But because Santa Rosa is actual hardware, and you can't just pop it in and wola like new OS's, it would be best to wait.

In my view, it all depends on if you need it now.

You should "only" buy technology when you need it, and never before. If you need it now, then buy it now, since you really don't have the option to wait.

If not, then wait for Leopard, Santa Rosa, or even the Montevina!

Prise, whats Montevina? Is it like just an upgrade, or is it going to be completely new like the jump for Pentium 4/D to Conroe?

just to share with all you mac people i was talking with a friend of mine at apple tonight, he was saying that we will see a whole bunch of "very good" new releases coming up. as well that apple wont go to santa rosa until after some of the other big players have made the switch, simply because apple needs to have the ability to ship tens of thousands of units when tis released, no paper launches.

he also hinted to me that there will be an upgrade in the video cards on the next gen of the MBP. it would be very interesting to see and i know i wouldnt complain. but i think it would also complicate peoples plans if they were itching for a new apple.

anyway this all is pure rumor though i do trust my source there. simply put i cannot verify or confirm things but i know it is exciting news.

great, that's all good news, but when is the big question
post #14 of 18
I will wait for the next generation, not just for Santa Rosa but also for the rumored video card upgrade. It would be nice if there was a screen upgrade as well (maybe the the LEDs??). I run very graphics card intensive applications and need all the extra boost i can get. Also Santa Rosa is supposed to be able to address > 3Gb RAM, probably 4Gb and agian that will help my apps.

I love my C2D MBP and I really couldn't wait any longer before I bought it. I waited just long enough for the C2D ones to come out. I might be slightly jealous when the new ones come out, but I don't really do anything that intense on my MBP anyway.

I have a Conroe desktop for that stuff. Anyway, since my wife and I have switched over to Mac lappys we have been nothing but impressed.

the one and only reason id wait on either is a case redesign, both are probably well over due (more the MBP)

other than that, specs meet all of our needs. If you need a Video card, the 8600gt is still wonderful.

I just bought @ end of March, a base MBP. i think ill be keeping it for a while.
