How easy is it to exchange Graphics Card on a M90 / 1710?

Hi All,

I was just wondering how easy it is to exchange graphics card in a Dell M90 or in a 1710 (I personally own a M90) ?

There´re rumours floating around that in the upcoming months there will be new Dell Notebooks with a 8800GTX available... Because (as you can imagine) I don´t want to buy a new notebook only because the graphics card I would be interested to upgrade as soon as DirectX 10 plays a vital role in Gaming (Only a couple of months away because when Crysis will be released, this should be the beginning).

Second question: Anyone already opened his M90 / 1710? Is the graphics adaptor fixed on the mainboard or is it MXM (or equivalent) ?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

There are plenty of repiles here on how to update the card, just read one of the stickies but if u were thinking of upgrading to the 8800 then don't get your hopes up.

Everyone thinks this will not be acheived in any existing model

8xxx will probably be only for Santa Rosa platform. And it rumored it will consume more power and accordingly generate more heat. So it may not be all that rosy.

What about Clevo M570RU ?

"Clevo reps at the show confirmed it would be the 8800 card."

That article was made to be an eye catcher.. the proof is in the pudding...which seems to be missing

Forget it. All talk and no meat, and even the talk is not consistent.

So the Clevo 5790 is probably NOT user-upgradeable to DX10, even if the power consumption, heat, etc. are acceptable? Well, shucks....

When I wrote this article (Original from 29th of March) no DX10 mobile card was announced. Anyway, couple of months later, I´m still wondering why the manufacturers are not able to produce any working and available thing like Asus announced during CES in Las Vegas (XG Station). This would be the solution for most of us.

Have a small little device at home where a high-end graphics card is built in, with a separate power supply would solve alot of things. Shouldn´t be rocket science to connect this thing with a new bus faster than external PCI express with 1x.

MAybe we should all create an online petition for this device and release the results to Dell ? (Just a thought).

Nice day, Michael

There is no market for such a device, case closed.

Let's say there is one. The price of the device alone will be high as most laptops.

See, there goes your market...

To get another 16x pci express lanes they'd need a new chipset. All the chipsets we use come from intel.

'All' you need to do is get intel to do a chipset redesign with more lanes and your set

Not gonna happen. If it does, an external station needn't be expensive at all. After all it is just a bit more than a socket adapter with a case and psu.

However, those external GPU cases are going to need one hell of a cable to be able to reliably transmit data to the card from the system. The external GPU cases I've seen available are like $500. So it's $800 to put an 8800GTS on your Laptop that won't perform near as well as it will on a desktop.

Real bottleneck for external card will be PCI express connection. ASUS external card with express card connector will have PCI Express x1 vs PCI Express x16 for internal cards.

If you would have told Konrad Zuse in the 1940´s that there will be people sitting in front of a 17" notebook computer with more computing power he could imagine alot of other people would have said that this is not possible, too expensive, not doable, and so on ... Back to reality: We know how it works in real life. If there is demand, someone will produce it. The only question is: How long do we have to wait for such device :-) Amen !

Nobody is saying it's impossible, but the thing is given the limited market such a product will appeal to nobody has much reason to make it and make it NOT cost $1000 on top of the price of the notebook to add an external video card.
