Hi everyone,

Ive been searching on this forum/google for a couple of hours to see if i can find a solution to this problem im having with a refurbished 9400 i have just purchased.

The small problems I have found with this Inspiron 9400 Laptop is that some of the LED lights do not appear to come on when buttons are pressed as follows:

1)Caps lock button does not turn on/off Caps lock led on keyboard. Caps lock light LED remains in an off state, even though caps lock has been enabled and appears to work ok.

2)Scroll lock button does not turn on/off scroll lock led on keyboard. Scroll lock light LED remains in an off state, even though scroll lock has been enabled and appears to work ok.

3)Num lock button does not turn on/off num lock led on keyboard. Num lock light LED remains in an off state, even though num lock has been enabled and appears to work ok.

4)Charging light icon does not appear to light up when charging. Charging light LED remains in an off state, even though battery is showing charging in BIOS.

The strange thing is that the WIFI, Bluetooth, Power, and HD activity lights all appear to work ok. Could it just be a loose cable as its a bit strange to have multiple leds not working? If so where do i check first?

Also when I press the Direct Media button when the laptop is off, shouldnt this still wake up and turn on the laptop even though the Direct Media software and partition are not present (yet). Pressing the Direct Media button leaves the laptop in an off state(no power)

Every thing else appears to work fine.

Thanks in advance for your help and advise

Seems like damaged LED bulbs in that portion of the notebook might want to ring up dell and have them replace the bezel inverter for you. As for MediaDirect If the MD parition was removed then the button becomes non functional which is usually the case when people reinstall windows.

Those LEDs are actually a part of the palmrest I beleive. So that will mostlikely be the part that is replaced. The Inspiron 9400's LEDs are on a small circuit board that is attached to the palmrest. The Hinge cover/keyboard bezel sits over these providing the cover with the glyphs on it.

SOLVED ALL INCLUDING FAULTY DIRECT MEDIA BUTTON.

Thanks for your help guys. I found that it was a cable to the motherboard that wasnt seated correctly on both sides that was the problem (Cable comes from LED Connector board on palmrest to motherboard). A 5 min fix, as the offending cable was only under the keyboard, and no need to take palmrest off. Now all lights and media button work.

Thanks once again
