It's not which card is better, it's about the types of antenna involved. The mini-pci card will use the internal primary and backup antenna's that normally feed up and around the display bezel. If these are routed well, and shielded well then you will have no issues running an internal min-pci.
If this is not the case, as in the case of the Alienware 7700 series that I own, you will have reception trouble on the mini-pci. I had to switch to an external PCMCIA card to get wireless reception. This goes back to AW not routing and shielding the internal antenna very well.
If you see complaints about internal wireless reception on your model laptop, then an external card may be for you, however they protrude from the side of the laptop, and you need to remember to have it with you at all times.
