VERY weird battery not recognized problem - Can ANYONE help?

Hey folks,

We recently purchased a Dell 1501 Inspiron laptop for my wife but since the day we got it (brand new from Dell) it's had a very strange problem that I cannot, for the life of me, seem to figure out. I've tried looking it up with not much success, either.

When the computer is turned on but before Windows starts to boot up, I get this message on a black screen:

----------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING: The battery cannot be identified.
This system will be unable to charge this battery.

Press Any Key to Continue

Press <F2> 2 times to enter SETUP
Press <F12> and Any Key to enter Boot Menu

----------------------------------------------------------------

However, the battery is fully plugged in and was brand new as of about 3 months ago. When I'm in Windows XP (Media Center) and pull up the DELL QuickSet software, it tells me this:

"Your battery can no longer provide sufficient power to your system and needs to be replaced."

Again, I've taken the following steps which seem to point towards the battery actually being good or working okay:

- Tested battery using the push-button test on the battery itself and it gives me 4-5 green lights (can't remember how many lights are on it but they all light up green), which I believe means that the battery is good.

- When the laptop runs on battery power it lasts for about 1 hour or so, which seems to indicate to me that it's working normally, I think. It also seems to be charging while it's plugged in, despite the weird error message from the QuickSet Software.

Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.

- I've updated the BIOS to current REV. but I still get the error on boot-up.

Hi

I came across this post recently - I'm having exactly the same problem. I've also come across it on other forums where the concensus seems to be that changing the battery won't help.

Did you find a solution to this - or is there nothing to be concerned about.

Many thanks

Rex

My Inspiron 1501 has come up with this exact same error - today. Working fine one moment and the next, after a restart - this battery error came on screen. Like yourself the battery seems to work and charge fine and XP Pro recognises it.

Inspiron 1501-Battery Not Recognized

I had this problem for a laptop that was 23 months old but one that had been used extensively on battery power. I tried to change the bios as some posters suggested but was prevented by an error msg. Although the battery showed 4 green dots, I purchased another new battery. Problem disappeared.

realized this is an old post

3 posts within last 6 months, not counting yours, 1 query + 2 good replies would not be considered an old post

cheers ...

I have this same problem too, even after updating the bios. As far as I can tell, the battery still gets charged SOMEHOW because the computer can consistently run a couple hours under battery power. When I unplug the battery while the computer is on, it also seems that the calibration is off on the battery charge - the system tray battery level icon will say something like Low Battery - 10% (2 hours remaining) - even back when it was working correctly, the battery isnt a long-life one - it never lasted much longer than 2 hours when it was brand new (assuming the computer was doing anything useful rather than idling. why would I idle under battery power?)

I've recently reformatted / reinstalled (for completely different reasons) and I still have the error even after updating the BIOS.

Just wanted to say thank you

I wasn't going to register but thought it would be polite to say thank you.

I was given a Dell Inspiron 1501 but I was having problems with it not reading the battery, so I did a search for the problem and your site came up. Read a couple of your posts and decided to update the BIOS on it and have not had the problem since.

Thanks a lot guys

Completely forgot to post that the problem disappeared after a Bios update. would recommend the procedure to all those having this problem.

just dell's way of getting you to buy their product.

Same problem here.  Message appears at least once a month.  Here is a little trick that I found that works.

1.  Power up the Notebook with the battery installed.

2.  Turn the computer completely off and remove the battery.

3.  Power up the Notebook with AC power only (no battery installed).

4.  Turn the computer completely off and re-install the battery.

5.  Power up the Notebook.

6.  The message no longer appears (at least for me it has disappeared).

7.  Unfortunately, the message will reappear in about a month,

and you have to go through these steps again.

The good news is that there appears to be nothing wrong with the battery, nor the battery charging system!

it is only this crazy message that seems to indicate a problem, and drives you crazy.
