3.  Power up the Notebook with AC power only (no battery installed).

4.  Turn the computer completely off and re-install the battery.

5.  Power up the Notebook.

6.  The message no longer appears (at least for me it has disappeared).

7.  Unfortunately, the message will reappear in about a month,

and you have to go through these steps again.

The good news is that there appears to be nothing wrong with the battery, nor the battery charging system!

it is only this crazy message that seems to indicate a problem, and drives you crazy.

Re-installing OS or updating BIOS would not help?

Thanks for your timely response.  I have updated the BIOS to no avail.  Over many years I have found that it not really my fondest experience to Re-install the OS.  Whenever I have done that, it seems that I have ended up with some unexpected side result.

The method that I have outlined above takes the battery from a reported 0% charged, up to showing 100% charged...immediately.

If this were an automobile and the gauge showed me zero oil pressure, or zero volts, and other indicators reported normal results, I would look for the sensor to be defective.  In the computer, I don't know where to look for a defective sensor (especially when a firmware or software anomaly could be in the mix).  So I am happy to flip my battery every month or so.

laugh4.gif I guess it ain't so bad being driving crazy from this little quirky thing - at least the system still performs nicely after all the years.

Hi,

You need to undertake the following steps to change your battery. Firstly, switch off your system and open your battery casing. Remove the old battery and replace it with a new battery. Now, close your battery pack and restart your laptop. Ensure that the new battery is charged according to the instructions given in the manual before using it for the first time.

So are you saying you must buy a original Dell battery?

I ask this because after 18 months of owning my Dell Vostro 1520 the battery is going bad. (which seems like the magic number for their batteries to go bad) So I ordered a off market battery for it as most people do because of the outrageous price dell wants to charge you for the original. Well when I installed it I got the "Warning: The Battery Could Not Be Identified..... The system will be unable to charge this battery" message many people have gotten with there Inspiron 1501 models. After that happened I put my old Dell battery that is going bad back in, and I do not get that message.

Could Dell be putting a program into their newer Dell laptops like my Vostro 1520, that will not allow off market batteries to work with their newer Dell laptops?

Not necessarily - I heard that Dell battery had the same issue now and then with the message. Sometimes BIOS update fixes it, sometimes the trick from Quiggers works. But it seems the best solution is always to get an OEM battery, regardless of brands and models (it's a rip off, I know winknudge.gif )

The only thing is these people who posted above me, had this warning message with the batteries in their laptops, not with only a new off market battery that they just bought. If I was sure that those two things mentioned in the post above would work with off market batteries on a Dell Vostro 1520, I would buy one again and try those solutions.

Has anyone in this forum ever replaced a battery for a Dell Vostro 1520 before?

I already bought a battery once that I am lucky to have had it refunded. I am not going to be a fool twice my friend. Just looking for someone who has already replaced their battery for the Vostro 1520 model successfully.

What Dell model do you have?

What is your battery part number (type number)?

I just ordered a Genuine Dell Vostro 1520 Type K738H which is the same battery that came with my Dell Vostro 1520. I downloaded the BIOS update A08 awaiting the battery from a fleabay seller out of China. I hope things go well, and I will report back how it turns out.

I have the Dell Vostro, 1520, I just shipped the 9cell battery back a few minutes ago but I'm pretty sure it was a T116C, It was a Dell Battery from Notebook Batteries in China, My original battery is the same as yours. My bios would not flash, I have a computer shop and sold two of these Vostro 1520's to the same customer, neither will accept this battery an neither will allow bios to be flashed. This is new one on me, can't say as I have run across it before! I have tried every fix I can find on Google with no luck. The 6 cell batteries will work in the laptops so I guess I will try a new original an see how that goes. Will post results but ya gotta figure the RMA is going to China so it will be awhile!

So are you saying that all of the batteries you tried in those Vostro 1520 laptops were off market batteries not the genuine original Dell K738H 6 cell batteries that come with the Vostro 1520?

arkmat,

The problem you had is you bought a off market battery from Notebook Batteries in China. I just got in a 6 cell genuine Dell battery from a fleabay seller in China, and to spite it not being a K738H battery type like the one that came in my Dell Vostro 1520, it worked just as well giving me 3 hours of battery life. The key is doing the newest BIOS update (which is the A08 update for Vostro 1520 laptops) before installing a new genuine Dell battery, and you will not get the flashing lights and "Warning: battery not recognized" problem many people are getting. My battery directly from China took 2 weeks to the USA, but cost me $42.50 with free shipping not the $135.99 Dell wants in their website.

Ok here is the thing if you buy a battery that is not from dell or not a dell battery it wont reconize it yes my english is bad any way what you do is the following because I just did it and the battery works.

1 install battery.dll extract it

2 reboot system with out plugging the charger in, and when you see the thing that loads up when u reboot plug the charger in and it works.

sadly every time you open the laptop you have to do the second step but hey its better then nothing

take care man hope this helped

Best regards

Try checking the 3rd line coming from AC adapter. Restore contact and the battery contact is gone. This is where comunicates the laptop with the AC adapter or inverse. This was my problem too on dell inspiron 1501.

I know for a fact exactly what the problem is and the answers you have are wrong:

Dell/Alienware have a proprietary system in the bios which communicates with your AC adapter through a very fine wire down the centre of your adapter cord to detect that your adapter is a proper Dell/Alienware adapter.  If the wire breaks it thinks its not a proper one and will not recharge your battery no matter what you do.  There are two ways to fix this:

1.  Wait for them to remove this from the bios which they were supposed to do in v10 but its never appeared.

2.  Replace the adapter but make sure it has the same rating especially the wattage and is rated to work with YOUR laptop - do NOT buy a Dell one as they are rediculously expensive.  I paid around £30.  The wire is very very delicate and WILL break so be prepared to replace your adapter more than once - I'm on my 4th in 2 years!

These are insteresting input. Would you both happen to take the "bad" adapter apart and share with us a pic of exactly what this 3rd line is all about?
