This is my first post here I have been looking through the forum for hours and there is a ton of info to process I need a laptop that can do it all it has to be able to run sound and video to a projector and sound board and run lights as well if possible. It will also need to be able to handle pictures and processing in something like photo shop do powerepoint presentations and replace my desktop at the same time so it will be running 80+ hrs a week and taken every were so it has to be tough size, weight, and batt life are not huge factors but something that will last for years without trouble is what I want. this is one I was kinda looking at but it is very cashy http://www.powernotebooks.com/configure.php?special=444 I am also willing to look at a Apple if it would be able to do it all. Please do not suggest a Dell you will never change my mind.

Do you want to game? I would look at the Apple Macbook Pro 15.4". It will be able to handle anything you need it to. But if you can wait a month, Intel is releasing their new Santa Rosa processor. Yeah so either a
MBP 15.4"
Thinkpad T60 either 14" or 15.4"
or Sony VAIO SZ
I would reccomend getting a laptop with a 15.4" screen or below. You don't want to carry around a 17" laptop all the time.

that one you linked is way to over priced for what you want, here are a few links if you NEED a 17 inch

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...P+Media+Center

any of those would be great and amazing build quality, the W2 series would be awsome, its all aluminium chasis means its gonna be sturdy for those 4 years plus, comes with remotes, windows xp media center, tv tuner all that jazz

given, mac has great multimedia programs, but if you just wanna play/burn/rip dvd's/mp3's and such, and mix them like a dj, a windows based lappy would do the same, and with a few of the laptops i linked they come with a tv tuner, so you can rip tv onto your lappy

Macs software is general easier to use less options but far more obvious how to do things, Pc you may get moire options but you might find yuor self going mad trying to do the obvious stuff.

well I do like easier but the graphics card seems a little week on the mac only Ati x1600 if I am correct is that going to be good enough for all my needs like I said I will not be doing much if any gaming but a lot of photo shop stuff / raw conversion and a lot of presentation work with of audio video and a few other programs at the same time on my desktop while that is being played on up to two projectors. Thank you all for your help

The graphics stuff you described is not at all dependant on the video card. Everything you mentioned benefits from more processor power and more RAM.

. The stuff you are listing really doesn't have anything to do with the video card. I mean a little bit, but your thinking that the video card does all of that. The ATI X1600 is more then enough for you. C2D 2.0 ghz, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB HD, and your set.

I did not know that I just that that I would need a lot of graphics power to help run every thing. so what is going to be the best for me?
You don't need a lot of "graphics power" to run everything you want to run. Your priorities should be
A) CPU
B) RAM
C) HDD/Video Card
I would try to get atleast 2.0 ghz like I said, and get 2 GB of RAM!!!

never mind core 2 duo thanks cpu ram hdd should I go for a 7200 hdd or is 5400 fine and is there realy much dif
post #15 of 16
Most desktops have a 7200 HD, if not all. So if you want a HD performance like your dekstop, then go with a 7200 HD. I would go with like an 80 GB 7200 HD or 100 GB 7200 HD because is pretty heavy duty, and you'll want the best bang for your buck

from yuor graphics card yuor looking more for features then power, when not playing a games graphics cards generally run at less then half there speed because its not needed. features are connectivity such hdmi dual output etc.

ideally if i was doing the task you wan to do you'd want a core duo, 2GB ram, and somthing like 2x 120G hdd running 7,200 in Raid as the hard drive will be accessed alot in those tasks and its the slowest component putting it into raid helps speed the hole thing up by transfering inoformation to both drives at the same time unfortunetly the rule of thumb is the more complex you make somthing less reliable it becomes.

A Mac does seem like a better option but its a good idea to make sure the softwares what you want so if you have any main programes you will be using have a look online at comparative reviews between mac and pc, its worth going to a local shop and having a play with both and see which you like and when it comes to PC you also have the XP vs Vista, personally i wouldnt touch vista yet.

Again you want a feature rich system when it comes to running lights it depnds what you mean and what controls systems yuor lighting has if yuor talking about control mobile disco setups probably best to see what other people doing that use.
