M1710 SDHC S.O.S. !!! Need Everyone's HELP!!

From other posts I realize that others are having the same problem that I have with the M1710 card reader. Apparently it is not compatible with the newer larger capacity Secure Digital SDHC cards (4 GB+). The reason may be because these newer cards are formatted in FAT32. Hopefully a driver update from Dell might fix the problem. I can't contact Dell support as I built my M1710 from parts and don't have a warranty or even a Service Tag #. I would like to ask you guys that have a warranty to call Dell Support to try to get a resolution. I'm amazed that Dell's flagship laptop can't use this newer technology. It is bound to be just an oversight on Dell's part. The more owners that contact Dell the faster we're likely to get a fix for this. This is likely a problem with all Dell laptops so everyone feel free to chip in.

THANKS in advance to all of you guys for helping us all with this small issue!

Hi there......As far as the Driver update is concerned it can't be fixed by that.....to cut it short....you need to modify hardware......which in this case is the SD controller on the motherboard.........so no way out....will have to stick with it.........as a turn around to this solution.....Buy a SDHC card reader to use it.

Quoting : http://www.slashphone.com/69/5162.html

"SD 1.0/1.1 uses traditional "Byte Addressing" scheme which limits the maximum capacity to 4GB while SD 2.0 adopts "Sector Addressing" scheme which is the same with the technique applied by Mu-Card Alliance in 2004 to reach the maximum capacity of 2TB (2048GB). SDHC cards can only work with SDHC compatible host devices. "

Hope this helps. Cheers

It should be obvious that dells current Ricoh memcard readers dont support SDHC but a later revision could change that for now its all you can hope.

Thanks for the comments guys but I am only interested in what Dell has to say about this or can do about this issue. After all, the M1710 is their top of the line notebook. Yes, I can purchase a USB card reader but I prefer not to have to lug around another peripheral and I think others may feel the same way.

So again, I'm asking for someone (many would be better) with a warranty to contact Dell support so we all may have a solution.

Thanks!

Dell support said it's a limitation of the Ricoh chipset and they don't plan on making revisions to it at this point in time.

Thanks for your efforts. I was hoping it would be something easy, but that never seems to be the case. Thanks again!

Certainly does not limit you to getting an external usb card reader that does support it though.

Its still annoying that Dells top of the line notebook sports obselete technology.

Bad Dell, BAD!

I would not say they sport obselete technology. SDHC has not been around that long & most people still use standard SD cards. I have a 4GB that works just fine on my M1710.

Odd though that my XPS M140 supports my 4GB SDHC card just fine, but my E1705 does not...

That's interesting. Do you know which card reader you have in the M140?
The XPS m1710 uses the same slow Ricoh card reader as the Precision M90 and the Inspiron 9400.

These readers not only do *not* support SDHC, but they also do not support faster SD cards like the Ultra III's from Sandisk. They cap out around 66x speed and will not reach the current 150x speed offered. So this makes the built-in reader useless for ReadyBoost or for syncing up your new digital camera's huge ass SDHC card.

I don't know exactly, but I do know that it's a Ricoh. I'll take a look and see if I can find a model number buried in the details. But I know with 100% certainty I can read a 4G SDHC (class 6) card without any issues. It's the only reader I have that will read that card.

I don't know if it applies, but my 9300 reads my 4GB SDHC just fine.

My 1710 reads my kingston 4GB SDHC Class 6 just fine.

Try searching for the ms update for sdhc in xp or use vista. My E1705 reads my transcend 8gb sdhc class 6. Works well for readyboost too.

Hard to believe it's been over 5 months (March 31st) since I started this thread, but now the problem is finally solved. Let's give a big round of applause to SargentNg for coming to the rescue. SargentNg Thank You Very Much!!! I just downloaded the file from The Hotfix Share website because Microsuck's support website wants you to request the file ???!!! Anyway, the file works fine with my Transcend 8GB card in my M1710 with XP. In fact, I've just transferred all the photo files I just took in Northern Thailand this week to my hard drive. Ahhh, no more cables and drained batteries!!! OK Brothers and Sisters... I have attached the file to this post, but if it doesn't show up here is a direct link: http://thehotfixshare.net/board/inde...s&showfile=999 The file is called WindowsXP-KB923293-v4-x86-ENU.exe. Other languages are available at Hotfix Share's website. Just use search string 923293 and other language versions will pop up. Cheers from Thailand and thanks again SargentNg!!!!!!!!!!
