Do dell laptops have protection against ESD?

Correct me if i am wrong but i do think Dell laptops are prone to ESD becasue they do not use 3 prong (with ground) plug ?

I have read countless of posts about people frying their laptops due to static discharge, whats your take on this?

with the amount of money people are spending on their laptops, you would think manufacutre would develop some type of material to stop the static from going through and cause damage to hardware

whats your opinion on this?

From what i seen at work, for the past 2-3 years all new dells and some older dells too do have 3 plug ac adapter on them

My Dell Inspiron 8600 had a three-prong plug. My brother's more recent E1505 has a two-prong plug, but he has had no problems with it so far.

I have never seen a Dell that did not come with a 3-prong plug, although I have seen rumors that some Dell laptops at some point were shipped with 2-prong ones. As far as I know, that was a passing episode.

The E1505 and E1705 currently ships with 2 prong power adaptors (in the US).

Thats odd, last year they were shipping with 3 prongs. I wonder what is making them do the switch

We have been buying 1505/6400's since they first launched them last year and I don't think we ever got a 3 prong adaptor. Most of my users prefer the 2 prong 65 watt adaptors because the cables are thinner and are easier for the users to wrap and carry(or so they say).

Dell has a stock of 2 prong adapters and it appears they randomly ship them out with systems. My D820 came with a 2 prong adapter when I bought it last April. Mind you if an ESD discharge strikes the metal of the chassis it shouldn't hurt the innards

I think alot of folks are incorrectly diagnosing ESD as the cause for a part failure. Their laptop dies on them and they attribute it to ESD. Mind you there's alot of problems that can occur with modern electronics that you can't see with the naked eye that aren't ESD related. This new Reduction of Hazardous Substances initiative is one example. Lead/tin Amalgam solder sticks to electronics ALOT better than lead free solder which is now used. Thus the solder joints are more prone to breaking. Whiskers are another concern, but those crystalline structures often take years to form large enough to short two joints.

My Inspiron 9400 (E1705 in the US) purchased in November shipped with a two-prong. I've been considering calling Dell for a replacement, if they're free. My friend's i9400 purchased several months earlier also came with a two-prong plug.

Unless your fingers are 5mm wide, I don't think you have much to worry about, since you won't be able to fit your fingers through the tiny slots.

I can touch my inspiron 6400's heatsink from the back air vent, and I have big fingers.

I got an M1710 back in July of 2006 and since I have three differnt XPS 130W PSU and I get shocked by ESD off the magnesium alloy case quite often. I got around to calling Dell today and they are sending me a replacement laptop because of it.
