Hello evryone!! This is my first post. I am really glad to find you guys. Cuz I don't know much about Alienware laptops. So I just got Alienware area 51m 766 laptop from ebay. It is in great condition and works awesome!!! it is intel pentium 4 3.4 ghz. 1024 mb DDR ram. 60gb HDD 7200rmp and 128 mb ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 AGP video card.

I want to upgrade my video card to ATI Mobility Radeon 9800 Pro 256 mb. I wanted to know if it's possible to do that. I know my laptop only supports AGP slot for graphics memory.

Let me know if it's possible to do that. And if I upgrade it to 256 mb do I need to upgrade my RAM also? make it 2048?

Help much appreciated!!! THank you!!!

It's not possible. The 766 used video modules specific to that platform only, Uniwill stopped making them when laptops changed to PCIe.

Nobody has any stock of these cards anymore, so you're best bet would be ebay.

Unfortunately, if your current gpu dies, the system is worthless without finding a replacement.

Keep an eye on excel computer, they sometimes have used modules.

I hope it won't die. And thank you for your help. But can I upgrade it to 256? and what kind of graphics card do I need to do it?

I returned your PM, but you can't swap the card, you need the "video module". The did make 256 versions of the 9700, but they're hard to find...
