Questions on the T60

I don't wanna make a bunch of threads so I'll just make this general question thread on some question I have.

Do the T60 thinkpads have matte screens?

yup

Does anyone know how the T60 keyboard compares to the E1705 keyboard maybe also the dv9000t keyboard? One of my main concerns is the keyboards and I have not been able to test out the dell 1705 one. I've tested a 3k lenovo at a computer shop but no exactly the T60.

Keyboards don't have specific specs for size or do they?

they're different between the E1705 and T60.

Since I own both, I'll tell you right now that the T60 has the better input setup. The trackpoint is better than the touchpad, the keyboard feels better (to me); actually everything about day-to-day use of the T60 feels better than the E1705 to me.

(I use the E1705 for music, movies, and gaming, with a Logitech G5 for the mouse; I use my T60 for everything else, and don't need a mouse)

I'm not a huge PC gamer and if I do play PC games it will probably be on my desktop.. But maybe when Diablo III comes around I might put it on a laptop.

Are you saying that the T60 cannot handle music, movies, low end games(nothing like oblivion). The X1400 would be able to handle maya, 3d studio max 9, photoshop cs2/3?

Another thing I am concerned with is the glossy screens. I just don't know why people prefer being blinded by glare. Unless I want to be in a dark room all the time, I would say matte is better.

I found a 1705 at a local computer shop and the keyboard is better than sony's keyboards. After trying them all, I've concluded that hp, dell, ibm all have pretty nice keyboards. But the trackpad buttons on the dell are crappy, imo.

I've just gotta figure out if I can stand glossy, or pay an extra 300$ for a T60. Also I need to figure out if I will have any problems with running maya, photoshop, etc. on the T60.

I'm not saying the T60 can't.

just that I bought the E1705 to play videogames, play music, etc. I've not gamed on the T60 only because I bought it for my non-mulitmedia stuff, and kept the E1705 for gaming. A 256mb 7800 Go + speakers w/ subwoofer certainly is better than a 128mb X1400. The widescreen has better speakers than the standard ratio T60.

Is there a reason you didn't get the 9400?

I wish there were nVidia gc options. I guess I'll end up going with the x1400 with the laptops I have in mind... the FireGL V5250 seems to be primarily for rendering, which I do need, but I don't want to be limited to just that. Might wanna play DIII in the future. I guess I can always just upgrade the ram and processor.

Does the CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 24X/24X/24X/8X Max, Ultrabay Slim burn dvds at 8X?

When I purchase warranties... is it an addition to the 1 default warranty? i.e. I get a 2 year protection warranty... so now I have 1 year base warranty and 2 years of protection warranty after that?

I'm read a lot of reviews/comments on the x1400 but I think most of these users are hardcore gamers. I use an x300 currently... seems fine for what I "used" to play. I do use photoshop/3d studio max 9. I might plan on using maya/cs3 in the future. Will more RAM be more effective than a better gpu?

Any recommendations on an after market dvd-r drive? I think I will replace the default one.

Are there any drawbacks to a Thinpad vs a Dell/HP when it comes to just doing basic multitasking tasks? I'm not so much compelled to purchase a T60 because it is a business laptop but just because I like how they look and the keyboards sound/seem very nice. Will Thinkvantage be a nusense?

I'm starting to think I should just go with a e1705

E1705 = 9400. 9400 is the business moniker, the E1705 is the home moniker, but it's the same unit.

When I had a T41P and T42P (both had FireGL T2-128 cards), it was able to play DirectX games, but gave errors whenever I tried to load OpenGL Games. There might be workarounds for that now, as I haven't dealt with the FireGLs in about 2 years.

1 The new drives burn DVDs at 8x, and dual layers at 2.4x. But, that may just be because my dual layers are slower, it might be 4x.

2. 2 year total.

I would think RAM will be of more use than GPU.

No, you won't. Ultrabay Slim drives aren't really made aftermarket. If you're wanting something like that, you'll probably end up getting a full size unit + external enclosure.

Nope. Thinkpad is as good or better than the other systems. They tend to be somewhat lacking on the GPU side, but that's not what they're meant for.

I format my laptops as soon as I get them, so I never used Thinkvantage. Can't really tell you

I wouldn't. My E1705 may be better for games & music due to its better videocard and soundcard, but I'd rather use the T60 for my day-to-day use.

How easy would it be to put another module of ram in? I think I read that one needs to take the whole thing apart? It isn't like dell where one can remove a lid?

If I get a T60 with Vista Business and put XP on it after I get it, can I put Vista Business back on the notebook later if I want to?
you take the palmrest off, but it's an easy enough task. 2 minutes tops.

Yes, you can put Vista Business back on. You'll get a chance to make a backup disc at the beginning. Also, while I've not checked into this personally, Vista's business license allows you to install XP Pro w/ the same key in conjunction with Vista Business for dual-booting purposes.

Is there any chance of Lenovo making a 17" notebook in the NEAR future?

Maybe, but the answers to your question will be pure speculation. Maybe, but they make more buisness oriented laptops, and buisness men/women don't want to lug around a 17" behemoth

When configuring a T60p I am giving only the Thinkpad 11a/b/g/n wireless lan mini-pci express card option and it says lenovo recommends the Intel PRO/Wireless ABG Mini-PCI Adapter.

What is up with that? They don't offer what they recommend?
tell you what. You order that ABGN and I'll give you my 3945ABG. I'll even pay shipping both ways.

I want the ABGN, but it's not available on their site, and I couldn't get mine configured with it.

The reason they recommend it is because Intel pays them to. With the 3945ABG, it gets Centrino Dual branding. With the ABGN, it's just branded as a Core 2 Duo.
