I recently bought a 1 gig stick of ram for my Inspiron 6000. I THOUGHT I got it with only 1 stick of 1 gig, but when I went to install the new stick, I saw that it has two 512's. I installed the 1 gig stick and left one of the 512's in... will this be ok? Will my performance be affected?

I did the exact same thing... ordered my i6kd it with 512mb on one stick... did the newegg thing 6mos later, and I love it.
There won't be any performance hit. In fact, the new ram you purchased may be faster/better stuff; however, both sticks will assume the speed of the weakest link. In other words, if the stick you purchased is faster, you won't see it's true performance until you change out that OEM stick.
You will have 1.5GB of RAM, which you'll notice is better than the 1GB you've been used to; however, it's Dell's practice to ship their laptops with the slowest (most inexpensive) ram they find reliable and let you sort out the upgrades.
