Dell Media Direct button doesn't work

MY CASE for MD3 for Inspiron E1505.

1. In first place the MD 3.0 cd must be used before you install any OS. It allows you to partition the HD by assigning a size for de C: (operating system partition). The rest of the HD is automatically assigned for the partition D: and for the space required for MD3.

2. At this point the MD is not yet installed. You are request to install your OP with you OP install cd. After you install the OP you are ready for really installing the MD3.

THE PROBLEM:

When I was initially partitioning the HD with the MD 3 cd there was the next error report:

[md3patch]updating XLOADER on disk 80h
[md3patch]failed to update BIOS with MD3 sector
[DOIT.BAT]MD3PATCH - Error setting up the MD3 power button
strike a key when ready..
.

After that I normally continue with the procedure mentioned in step 2.

The problem came when I tried to use the MD button (with my computer turned off). There was displayed the MD presentation but just after that the OS (Win XP) was opened instead of the MD3.

THE SOLUTION:

I found a BIOS update for Inspiron E1505 at:

http://support.dell.com/support/down...id=-1&impid=-1

I ran this update from Windows.

After that I restart my computer from the MD3 cd. It will format your HD and you will follow the steps mentioned at the beginning of this conversation.

It worked for me! I hope it works for you!

can you reinstall MD3 without reformatting the hard drive? Mine doesn't work and I just got this laptop.

if the partitions are set up properly you should be able to, just stick in the disc in Windows and try it

In theory, it sounds like you should be able to resize your partitions with partition magic, then use md3patch.exe and setupmd.exe with the command line args from stage1\doit.bat to add mediadirect without having to reinstall the OS

Hi there,

Could anyone please help me solve the following problem?
Let me, first of all, inform you that I actually step by step followed the instructions put on one of the threads of this forum in order to install MediaDirect 3 with Windows Vista. Indeed, it worked perfectly! But then something went wrong when I recently ran a wrong upgrade/patch for my Dell printer 924 that I downloaded from the Dell's website in order to make my printer work with Vista. In fact, the upgrade/patch messed up with MediaDirect 3 and removed it from Windows. Now, the MediaDiect 3 botton is still working if I press the MediaDirect button when my laptop is turned off but MediaDirect 3 is not working anymore in Windows! I mean MediaDirect 3 is not opening anymore if I press the MediaDirect button or if I click on the MediaDirect icon on my desktop when my laptop is turned on!
As a matter of fact, I tried a system restore but it didn't help! And when I also tried to re-install MediaDirect 3 for Windows by running 'DELLKIT.EXE' after exploring the MediaDirect 3 DVD and after opening the folder 'DELLKIT' inside, I got a message saying 'MediaDirect is already installed on your PC. Please click Esc to exit'!
Do you have any idea about how I eventually can repair it and make it work again when the system is turned on i.e. with Windows Vista?

Thanks in advance and kind regards,

peteriiino

N.B. Additional information on the printer upgrade/patch I mentioned above.

When you boot with the media direct cd, quit out, and use the command line exe files in the stage1 directory. setupmd.exe and md3patch.exe. You may want to be careful with dellpart.exe since it could erase what you got. Mainly read the ini files that it uses and modify them to not reformat your main drive.
