I'll switch with you. I have the 1400x900 Inspiron 9400.

I'm trying desperately to see the sense in that? Surely if you want a lower res screen you would just crank the screen resolution down through windows...

I would have to agree with Airwalker

But the res wouldn't be native. Many of my friends think 1920x1200 is too small on the 17. I like it myself, but I do understand why someone might want to change.

You can use a larger DPI or large fonts and it hsould help out a lot.

1440x900 on a 1920x1200 screen would look blurry.

I'd take a little bluriness in the occasional game that can't run at 1920x1200 over not being able to fit two windows side by side, or using programs hungry for desktop real estate, e.g. audio and video editing software, 3d modeling software, photoshop, etc.

I'll stick with my high res 17" until I'm blind. I love it. you have to consider the difference between a lower res desktop 17" and a high res laptop screen- With a lappy you are sitting considerably closer to the screen. Increasing the DPI should fix your issue

It's not THAT illogical. Hell, there were plenty of times on my 17" 9300 @ 1920x1200 that I got severe eye strain. Things are just tiny at that res on that sized display. The perfect res for a 17" IMO is 1680x1050. The extra screen real estate is nice, but there are some definite disadvantages. Also, he'll be able to game longer at 1440x900 in native res.

I don't know why Dell doesn't offer 1680x1050. I'd personally downsize to that res in a heartbeat on my m1710. 1440x900 would be too big of a step for me personally though. Perithimus: Whatever floats your boat man. What's important is that you are happy with the laptop.

well when i custom built my m1710 originally i had the 1440 wxga lcd. I didnt mind it, but then i got the True Life 1900 the GLossy one and it was amazing! Their are a few kinds of 1440 lcds, the first one i had on my m1710 looked really good. The one that i had on my moms 9400 that i built her, looked like crap though. So i think their are different versions of the regular WXGA lcd, if you get the better version it does have some advantage over a True Life. It looks better at its native 1440, and its brighter.

Really thinking bout it. Not sure if the 9400 lcd is compatible with the M170 though.

That's just, well,
...crazy.

At least be smart about it. What these dogs aren't telling you is that you can pick up a new low res screen for the same money that you can sell your used hi res screen. So why not have them both at the same time just in case you decide that a lower res screen is not really where it's at? You'll still have the choice, and you'll probably break even on the deal completey, postage included, if you stay with the low res screen.

I had to drop in on this - last month, I ordered a batch of 9400's for my company including one for myself (I do love my job). Everyone got the 1920x1200 tru life but me - I used to have a XPS2 with that screen, and I always found it a little hard to read. I figured 1400x900 would be the perfect resolution for me, and I could run games native at the lower rez too and get better framerates.

3 days later I called my business rep and had them switch me out. Maybe it took seeing them side by side, but the 1400x900 screen is noticably lower in quality than the tru life. Not as bright, not as colorful, and it's an odd resolution that quite a few games/monitor apps had issues with. The whole experience was just "funky", I can't describe it any better than that.

Since then I've come to appreciate my higher resolution screen. In Vista, at least, there are a lot of options for increasing text size, icon size, etc over XP (which is pretty basic in that regard) so I've stuck with that.

My suggestion is you stick it out with your 1920x1200 screen and get used to it/fiddle with the settings. You will prefer it over the lower resolution screen, trust me.

I have a 9300 that i would be interested in swapping - I would love a higher res. And, since the 9300 is the same as the XPS 170, there is no compatibility worries. I am not sure how it would actually work out though; if you are still interested, PM me.
