I really tried to pass on this this thread; -to just shrug and not bother with my two cents.
...But I just couldn't do it!
WHAT, in the HELL, is wrong with everybody?! Is everyone suffering from muscular atrophe or something?
Now I'm not a big guy, but man I cannot sit here and read all this whining about having to "lug" around this Gawd-awful wieght- Man, you guys act like it's 20 pounds or something!
I have an I9200, essentially the same chassis as the OPs. I've been inside it for mods and repairs, and this thing is pretty sparse inside. There's nothing that can be shaved down weight wise that will have this notebook anything but floppy!
Remove the essentials; the bits that you couldn't shave wieght from even if you wanted to. The hard drive, the disk drive, the battery, the RAM, the mini PCI, the Bluetooth card, the motherboard, the fans, the speakers, the touch pad, the LCD. I have extra chassis parts for my 9x00, and with no components inside, a hollow 9x00 body wieghs about 2.15 pounds. The bulk of it is made from magnesium alloy.
The best you're going to get beyond that is stamped aluminum alloys, stamped titanium, or carbon fiber. For a 17" notebook, you'll be lucky to save anything over a pound... -for a cost of at least a grand more.
I'd love to have a notebook made of those materials, but only because I'm a metalsmith, and there's no build quality like stamped or machined metal.
