My T60 is eating modular bay batteries...

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I am having some weird weird stuff going on... my T60 (2623-D6U) is going trough modular bay batteries quite quickly... let me describe:

First battery, it stopped carrying charge (full capacity is 29 WH, it'd charge only to 20) after 25 cycles.
Second battery started discharging super fast - it'd jump from 85% to %65 in a snap.
Third battery stopped carrying charge again (after 5 cycles); same with the 4th one (after one cycle) and now the fifth one is discharging super fast at 0 cycles (fresh RMA replacement).

Anyone ever experienced this? I have a 3 year in home warranty - will they be able to fix it at my home?

Thanks!

I have the same problem. It's because the battery is drained to 0% every time. As the battery will only hold about an hour charge (and is always drained before the primary) this happens all the time. This is really rough on the battery.

As far as I know, there is no solution besides leaving it out until you absolutely need it. There really should be a software workaround... very annoying.. thanks lenovo!

How old are the batteries in question?

I'm going to go ahead and assume that the batteries are lithium-ion, like most all modern laptop batteries.

That said, the best known way to destroy a lithium-ion battery (besides setting it on fire) is to deep cycle it. IOW don't completely discharge a lithium-ion battery...ever. Instead charge the battery frequently. There is no memory effect like is the case with older rechargeable battery technologies.

So, chances are the damage is already done and it's new battery time.

One more thing, lithium-ion batteries typically last only 2-4 years regardless how they are used and typically last only 200-300 charge cycles. This is because there is a "chemical clock" that starts ticking the moment the battery's cells are produced and with time the internal resistance of the battery becomes so high that it can no longer hold or deliver a charge. This is true for *ALL* lithium-ion batteries...not just Lenovo-branded batteries.
