you will probably have to pull the motherboard out of the laptop and inspect the dc jack more closely. you can get the service manual from HP's website.

I solved the same problem with a media connector that attaches to the side and accepts your A/C plug. You'll never have the problem again.

OP: you have to take the keyboard and LCD out before you can get to the motherboard. with the bottom taken off, you simply pull out the bit on the top that has the power and media buttons on it, but make sure the screen is folded all the way back. then you take the screws out of the keyboard, remove it, then take the 8 screws out holding the monitor in. 4 are in the plastic on the outside, where it hinges. Then, there are 3 screws holding the motherboard into the case, remove those. Last step, there are 3 screws in a small metal plate, take those out, and you can remove the silver thing. I had the same problem, I just ordered a new DC jack this week.

@ranbunctious: What? I've never heard of that. Where'd you get it?

I've been using my media cable with an extra power jack on it for over a year now without a problem. I'll never replace the power connector for $400 ever again! This media cable is a little bulky, but at least I can still use my laptop without power problems. It plugs in the right side in front of the s-video and ethernet jacks. Works like a charm. I got mine on Ebay for around $45. There are two different media cables. Make sure you get the right one. Let me know if you have trouble finding one.

Hey RANBUNCTIOUS could you please give me a LINK to the ebay item, or the exact name you put into ebay. I have the same laptop with the same issue and I rather buy this "media cable" instead of trying to replace the jack. I have searched on ebay for zv5000 media cable but have 0 results. Please let me know. Thanks.

The media cable is XC1000. They are getting rare and more expensive, but still better than several hundred dollars ever other year for a jack replacement. I'd google "XC1000 media cable", and you should get plenty of hits for purchase options. Good luck!!!
