You aren't losing much speed for normal use. For people who do lots of video rendering, and other applications that r/w to the hard drive, it may be a noticeable difference.
Opening something like a browser or other application happens almost instantaneously. It may take slightly longer to install a game, but once it's installed, I don't notice much of a difference with the 160GB 5400 RPM drive, even if the game requires loading of levels while playing.
You can google benchmarks comparing the various speeds of hard drives.
Also ... I'm not sure it's true that ordering over the web means you can't get any price breaks. It's always worth a call. The biggest issue is, most often, Alienware drops your order back to the early phases if you change anything ... even getting a price break.
