Hi Guys,
I just got my Asus A8JP today and I'm in love. This is a very brief mini-review with some photos. Hope you enjoy!!
SPECS:
Windows XP Media Center Edition
2.0ghz Intel Core 2 Duo T7200
1GB ddr2 667mhz RAM
120GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
8X DVDRW Optical Drive
512MB ATI Mobility Radeo x1700 (256MB Dedicated)
14.1" 1440x900 Glossy Widescreen Display
Built-In 0.3MP Webcam
Built-In Mic
Bluetooth v2.0+EDR
PRICE: $1264
SCREEN QUALITY 8/10
The high resolution 1440x900 screen looks stunning. Viewing angles are very good. Screen only looks washed out from high above but side to side its excellent as well as from below. Games looking stunning at native resolution on this thing. The only cons is the screen build quality. There is some flex and ripple when you apply pressure from behind and the screen does wobble slightly but nothing drastic.
PROCESSOR 9/10
I've had this processor b4 in my dv2000t and like b4 this processor smokes. Havent run Super PI or anything but there is instant responsiveness and smooth multitasking. Best Bang for your buck
GRAPHICS CARD 8/10
This thing comes loaded with the ATI x1700. While not as fast as the nvidia 7700go it flew thru all my games with ease at native resolution. I played COH, W40K, COD2, C&C3, etc.
3DMARK05 SCORE: 4205 (stock drivers)
HARD DRIVE and OPTICAL DRIVE 8/10
The hard drive is stable, speedy and silent. Only downside is that its broken up into two FAT32 partitions. There is a desktop converter to convert them into NFTS. I'm not going to bother merging them until my Windows Vista Ultimate copy arrives. The Optical drive does make some whirring noises but nothin too distracting but you do notice when its at work.
BUILD QUALITY 8/10
Build Quality is above average. Screen quality is good. Chasis is solid with no creaking or weaknesses. Chasis also has a built-in webcam and built-in mic. Chasis is very efficient with heat dissipation. The laptop gets very warm but never too hot. There are no distinct hotspots and vent is located on the upper right side and doesnt interfer with my mouse hand which I keep slightly below it. Paint on the lid and palmrests is a con bcuz it will eventually wear over time and is prone to scratches. I will be extra careful with this.
KEYBOARD AND TOUCHPAD 7/10
Keyboard has very little flex and is very responsive. The FN and CTRL buttons are swapped which is annoying but you do get use to it. The reason I rate it a 7 is because Ive seen and felt better keyboards (i.e. Sony Vaios, Dell XPS 1210, etc). Touch pad is very sleek and buttons have a unibutton design. Takes some getting use to but overall looks very sexy.
PORTS 10/10
This is the part of the notebook that is perfect to me. All the ports are placed ideally and there are lots of them.
5 USB ports
1 Firewire port
1 DVI-D port
1 Headphone and S/PDIF out
1 Microphone
1 Expresscard
1 4-in-1 Memory card reader
1 VGA out port
1 S-Video Port
1 Gigabit Ethernet port
1 Dial-up Modem port
SPEAKERS 7/10
Speakers get reasonably loud but not room filling. It also lacks bass but thats expected. I hear alot of people say bad things about the A8J series speakers but to me they are more than adequate for a laptop.
Battery Life 7/10
Decent. Gets about 2:35 with wifi on and general computing Tasks. Gaming it gets 1:45 and with a movie 2:15. Not bad considering I didnt calibrate the battery and doin so will get me about 15 more mins.
Overall: 8/10
Very satisfied and I highly recommend the A8J series to anyone on a budget looking for a lightweight laptop with near-desktop power.
