XP Drivers for Gateway MT6821

Thread Starter
Hi Everyone, I just finished installing Win XP Pro on my Gateway MT6821. It originally came with Vista, but it was constantly crashing and so I changed to XP Pro for stability and compatibility with my business programs. I am having problems finding the drviers I need to finish the install. I am looking for the chipset, video, audio, modem, touchpad, etc. I cane find the Vista drivers on GW's website, but not any for XP. Can someone please help me with this.
have u tried the intel web site? i recommend that u go thru (may be it is late) the device manager and jott down the hardware/device model & manufacturer and search on the net for it. Information by gw is quite generic regarding where the device comes from

cheers ...

I just finished dual-booting a friend's Gateway MT6821 laptop with pre-installed Vista and XP Pro. I spent hours locating all the hardware drivers necessary for XP. If you still need any or all drivers, and have access to newsgroups let me know. I will post them there

Hi Samuel, Your XP Pro installation CD is not seeing your HD because your HD is a serial drive (SATA). If you don't want to slipstream a SATA driver into a copy of XP (believe me that is a pain in the butt), you need to get a USB Floppy Drive. If you don't have one and can't borrow one from a friend, then go to best buy or even Office Max or Office Depot. It will run you about $40. You also need a formatted Floppy disk. Download the Floppy Configuration Utility Intel Matrix Storage Manager ver 5.5.0.1035 from the following link: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scri...4&submit=Go%21 Run the program and follow the directions it gives you about putting the software on the floppy disk. After that, attach the USB floppy drive to your laptop and boot from the CD. When prompted to 'hit (F6) if you need to install SATA/Raid Drivers', do so. After the SATA Drivers are installed from the Floppy disk, XP will now see your HD. I don't know if you are planning on dual-booting like I did. If you are keeping Vista, you should have already partitioned your HD by using the Disk Management Console in Vista. This link will show you how: http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about88231.html Please do not erase your recovery partition that was installed by Gateway (It's there for a reason)!!! You will need the following drivers for XP to run on your laptop (MT6821). You might want to download them and burn them to CD before doing anything else because without the XP drivers, most of your hardware (including your network hardware) isn't going to work. Here is the list of drivers you need: 1) Intel Controller Driver ver: 5.5.0.10; http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156074580 2) Intel Video Chipset Driver ver 6.14.10.3856; http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156075670 3) Intel Wireless Network Driver ver 10.1.0.13; http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156075824 4) Media Card Reader ver 2.0.06; http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156075984 5) Motorola Modem Driver ver 6.11.04.02; http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156076070 6) Motorola Modem Software ver 6.11.11.03; http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156076179 7) Sigmatel Audio Driver ver 5.10.5031.0; http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156076284 8) UAA High Definition Audio fix kb888111.exe; go to http://hf.xable.net/ and manually locate the kb888111.exe download link (only install this if you still have no sound after installing Sigmatel Audio Driver; Go to microsoft website to learn more about this fix-- follow this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111 ) 9) Synaptics Touchpad Driver ver 8.1.13.0; http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156077128 10) Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility ver 2.11.15.0; http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...ional&lang=eng 11) Intel LAN Driver for XP ver 8.49.2.3; http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...Name=&lang=eng I would install the Intel Chipset Software (#10 on the list) and the Intel Controller Driver (#1 on the list) first. After that, it shouldn't really matter the order. I do know the last thing I installed was the UAA High Definition Audio Fix (#8), because after installing the Sigmatel Audio Driver (#7) I still didn't have any sound. After opening up the device manager in XP, I realized the problem was because of the UAA High Definition Audio driver needed to be updated also. Depending on the ver of XP PRO that you have (pre-SP1 | SP1 | SP2) you may or may not need the UAA fix. If you install Sigmatel Audio Driver (#7) and can hear audio clips, you don't need to install (#8). After you install all the drivers, open up the Device Manager and make sure that you have no expanded fields. Every piece of Hardware listed should have a compact field (it should have a (+) to the left of it). If any hardware field is expanded and you see either a red X, a yellow !, or a red ?, then you need to install that particular driver again. After you install all the drivers and are dual-booting, you will need to install VistaBootPRO. You can download it free from here: http://www.vistabootpro.org/ Follow the directions from http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about88231.html in order to restore Vista's Boot Manager. They explain it better than I could.

Hi Billy thanks for the links!! i've got 2 more questions... while I was trying to install xp by mysefl without any consult... accidentally I formatted the whole HD so, I erased the recovery partition... what should I do now? when i got the win vista back it didnt create the partion so its totally gone, any suggestions? and my other question is that I've already downloaded the drivers from all the links you posted but while i was doing it I read that the MT6821 was not supported (listed) on the product support for each driver... so I assume that you already used the drivers and they work properly, I just wanted to get that clear before I messed up again thanks for your time im still working on that issue...

Samuel,

All the drivers that I posted work for your machine. The reason they are not on any of the supported laptop lists is because MT6821 didn't ship with XP so Gateway support sees no reason to include your model number on any of the lists. However, Gateway uses the same hardware devices found in both Vista and XP models. I matched up every piece of Hardware found on MT6821 with other XP laptops with the same hardware.
As for deleting your recovery partition, sorry to hear that happened. The only thing that I can think to do is make a full backup of your PC once you are done installing all the drivers. Vista has a built-in backup feature that will backup your entire pc. The backup feature can be found in the control panel under 'backup and restore center'. Good luck

I also didn’t like Vista, so I threw in my MX6441 restore disk (XP Media Center 2005), (The MX6441 was lost in a house fire, I am not a pirate), & did a destructive install (complete format) when it was all said & done I rebooted, got the XP boot up screen, then blue screen of death, so I went out & bought a copy of XP Pro, started to do the setup with that & XP Pro said I had no fixed drive attached. so I thought the drive was bad, I had a spare Toshiba 40 gig laying around, I took my drive out & realized It wasn’t an IDE, so scratch that idea, I did some searching & a lot of reading & found out I needed a SATA driver for the disk.
So I went over to driverpacks dot net & slipstreamed the driver onto a disk, booted it up, then it found my disk, let me format the drive & did the install, then when windows fired up for the first time...Blue screen of death, its only for a split second so I cant tell you what the error code is, but, I am at the end of my troubleshooting abilities & I'm getting grief from the wife, she says, "I sure am glad we spent $800 on a laptop that doesn’t work" so with that being said, any help/ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks in advance

Hey all. I was referred over here for this problem. Any help?

Success!

We downloaded the drivers. There were a few tricks along the way.

First of all, we wanted to *only* have Windows XP installed on the machine. We needed to run GIS software, and this does _not_ work under Vista, and there are no plans to port it. This made things interesting.

The first thing we did was to build the SATA drivers disk from the first driver in the list. This is actually an .exe file that you have to run, which will build the disk. The program was a little finicky and had to be run a few times to get the floppy built. I wanted to try getting to the drivers via a USB thumb drive, but, a USB floppy drive is required.

So, starting a fresh boot from a certified Windows XP CD, we hit F6 with our floppy in the drive. After a while, were prompted to select a driver. There are 4 to choose from. We chose the Mobile version. Viola - the hard disk is now recognized.

We deleted and reformatted the Vista partition, leaving the recovery partition in place.

The first gotcha hit us here - by deleting the Vista partition, the recovery partition was promoted to primary, which meant that the machine thought the recovery partition was the C: drive and tried to boot from there.

That doesn't work.

So, after a bit of angst, we blew away the recovery partition. The Gateway recovery CD makes this partition obsolete, anyway, if you really want your Vista back. Actually, at this point, we couldn't even install Vista because of the recovery partition. So we had little choice.

Now we restarted the whole XP install again, making one giant, clean partition. Installed XP to there. Worked like a charm. So. The steps, in order:

1) Run the SATA drivers program and build a SATA driver floppy disk
1a) Attach a USB floppy to the laptop
2) Put the XP installer disk in the CD driver
3) Hit F10 while the machine boots, choose to boot from CD
4) While XP fires up, hit F6 when asked
5) Select the Mobile SATA driver
6) Delete and reformat both partitions, when asked
7) Install XP to the new, clean partition
8) After XP is fully installed, run all of the remaining drivers off of billy91's list

Thanks to billy91 for digging up all the drivers, otherwise we'd have been stuck with $900 of machine that wasn't any use.

Shame on Microsoft for prematurely strong-arming vendors into only supporing Vista.
Shame on Microsoft for releasing such a user-hostile operating system with inadequate backwards compatibility. (And don't tell me how it is required for security reasons - that's bull)
Shame on Gateway for caving to Microsoft and not supported downrevving to XP. They should take a hint from Dell and start supporting XP officially.

If you're undertaking this exercise, just be assured that it does work.

vendors and manufactuers have ample time to get their drivers up to date and so on - on this note, i must say that my beat.up.old emachines flies under vista (&xp)

back to the above post, it is quite perplexing to try to understand this INcompatibility on many NEW machines and totally compatible on many OLD machines ...

gateway/emachines (among many other manufactuers) r notoriously known for the lack of (or very late) postings of device drivers on their support sites - got nothing to do with either vista or xp

dell still supports xp because they do not want to dole out $$$$ (or still negociating to get a better deal) to update their drivers, especially in the gpu area. I personally think it is a low ball advert approach to blame other for their own dilemna - but good advert point regardless!

Maybe, but I don't think so ghn, I heard that Creative will be dropping the PCMCIA Soundbalster Notebook line, and as for now it's being supported, but, not for long, as the cardsolt 54 version of the notebook sound device is about to be released soon, it will replace the PCMCIA slot, and most notebooks aren't even shipping with them anymore....as long as the Creative Audigy 2Z PCMCIA Notebook Sound card is still supported, that's a good thing, don't think that will last tho.........

I get to the point where Windows asks me to insert the Matrix Disk in A: and Press Enter, then it freezes. Pressing Enter does nothing.

I now have a dual boot MT6821. I used NLite, which noto only lets you add the SATA drivers, but also lets you set all kinds of Windows tweaks and even creates a boot disk for unattended installs. I chose a semi-unattended install.

It's easier than the other method posted here but I used all of the Billy91 drivers - thanks again. There are ways to slipstream many of them, but I was just trying to make it as simple as possible.

Couple of tips:

Here's a link to the instructions.
http://www.short-media.com/articles/...g_windows_easy

You need XP w/SP2. You can skip down to this part...
NLITE download
Don't forget to download the nLite program.

Begin the slipstreaming process

You also need the Sata files from the floppy, but no a floppy drive.

My advice is to burn a simple version without a lot of frills. Then, you can make a custom version.

I was amazed that I got this to work, but it was actaully pretty easy.

Enjoy

Whenyou install XP, don't presss F6, it will autmoatically load the SATA drivers you put on.

well, sorry for bringing this topic back up, but i have a few questions.

i want to put XP on my Gateway mx8734 and i was wondering if i can use a USB flash drive instead of a floppy disk and where i can find some drivers for it. currently i have teh display, media reader, and the SATA conrollers. cant find the wireless drivers, and thats all i really need at the moment.
