XP Drivers for Gateway MT6821 - Page 2

Billy91, Folks,

I just acquire the GAteway Mt6821, and I am tired of this Vista crashing my system all over the place, would you please send me the link where I can download the drivers, or the drivers it self, Thanks!

Hey guys. I have found this thread extremely helpful. Especially post 6. This process works perfectly. I have even managed to used Nlite to easily create a slipstreamed xp with SATA drivers attached.

I now have a working Dual-Boot of XP / Vista. However...

2) Intel Video Chipset Driver ver 6.14.10.3856;
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=156075670

This Video Driver installs and seems to work. However in DXDIAG, under display it is only showing 128mb of video memory. My MT6821 has 224 of shared mem for the video card.

My purpose for installing XP was to run one game. Day of Defeat: Source.

System requirements are down in the 'P3, 256 / 64m video' range.

When opening the game. I get what looks like a memory error

Here is the error:

Day of Defeat Source: hl2.exe - Application Error

The Instruction at "0x0ff03e2c" referenced memory at "0x0e39a1a0". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

so... it looks to me like a driver problem. I tried to download the lastest 2007 Intel 945 Express Chipset Driver which installed and works however, it still only recognises 128mb of video memory.

If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. I will try some things on my own and post my results.

Again, thanks for all your help, this thread has saved my @$$.

Well. Nothing seems to work. I tried talking to a Gateway rep, who told me to go ahead a put in my Vista Recovery DVD and Reinstall the OS :-\. They said there is no driver support for XP, although clearly mostly everything seems to have a driver.

I saw an Intel site regarding the GMA 950 with a list of compatible games.

http://support.intel.com/support/gra.../CS-021400.htm

Half Life 2 is not supported by the 950.

Although. In Vista, I CAN play the game. At a constant 9fps...
I Cannot get into the main screen of the game in XP. I'm assuming this is because XP Only sees 128mb of video memory and is giving a memory error because it cannot access the rest of the ram. If there were a way to change the share memory size, or get a better driver. This may work.

Anyone any ideas??

Update:

I have now managed to lower my video memory down to 64mb! I don't know how I did this, but the only thing I changed was a BIOS update from gateway.. Still 224mb in vista, 64mb in XP...

I have even done a format and reinstalled EVERYTHING and it was still 64...

I guess manufacturers now simply do not have to make their products backward compatible to "older" operating systems... I thought this laptop was "Vista Ready" not "Vista Only"...

Hi billy91,

Thanks for your comprehensive information. You rock.

But I have a question here.. for anyone interested to ponder. I hated the vista that I got on MT6821, some of the applications that I have to use don't play nice with vista and I dont appriciate the resource hog of the Vista for not a lot of improvement (for what I do with the pc) over XP; so I installed XP; slip streamed all my drivers with nLite and the whole nine. But after I finished installing i had a few problems.
1. Some of the devices still have the yellow exclamation on them, even the LPT1 (and the TI 4 in 1 card reader)
2. this is even more serious. XP did not recognize my laptop as ACPI compliant so every time I shut down my pc it gives me the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message instead of shutting it down itself. I tried updating the BIOS, but when I try to run the bios update they have on the Gateway site it gave me blue screen of death.
3. Don't even get me started on Gateway Support !!

Anyone has any ideas?

Thanks

Yeah, Gateway is one of the OEM's that doesn't support the downgrade of it's PC Systems to XP, Dell HP/Compaq and a few others do, Gateway/Emachines is not one of them................. Try going into the BIOS and selecting Defaults and see what that will do, I don't buy the whole Vista BIOS being the problem here as a BIOS is only what boots-up the PC, you should be able to install and use XP, so, are you sure you have all of the XP Drivers that you could find for your MT6821, this also includes the XP chipset mobo drivers as well? Another option you can try is to "DO A REPAIR OF XP W/ your XP CD" there is NO reason why XP did not detect all are some of your systems hardwear after you installed XP........... if you were connected to the internet after the XP install, you should have seen a pop-up saying "Found New Hardwear" for some of the XP drivers that may not have installed correctly? Also the yellow exclamation marks tell me that you don't have the correct XP drivers, are they DID NOT install correctly, I would delete the drivers in question (the ones w/ the yellow exclamation on them) and start-all-over again, that may help FIX whatever is Array in your XP install Here's One more thing? if you somehow got the WRONG XP drivers and slipstreamed them into the XP CD you made, then that may also be a big part of your problems w/ the blue screen of death as well as the NON ACPI compliant problem you are having w/ your XP install.

The floppy should work fine unless you are using the wrong drivers. or the floppy drive is not automatically recognised by XP, or you forgot to press F6 to load the driver from the floppy... In either case, I would suggest you try slipstreaming the driver onto the XP CD. This is how I got XP on my MT6821 and it works nicely (Apart from games).. Check a few posts back on how to use NLite and ensure you have the proper Sata/RAID driver. Then, when you boot the XP CD there is no need to press F6. When XP is finished. Read post 6 for drivers. They ALL work, though make sure you install the Intel Chipset driver FIRST. I hope this helps. Go0d Luck

Fantastic post with great research. I was up and running XP on this notebook for a long time with this info. However, suddenly my keyboard has stopped working. Sometimes external USB works and sometimes it doesn't.... I remoted into the machine and the device manager says there is no driver for the keyboard. I have tried many things to try to install a keyboard driver, searched gateway's downloads/drivers database, tried to figure out part number unsuccessfully, etc. Reinstalled the chipset, updated to latest chipset. I'm ready to give up.... any ideas?

Thanks denb45 for your reply, I have been busy these days; I didnt check in the post.

I will try your suggestions today or tomorrow and let you know how it turns out.
Hmm. Keyboard isn't working? There wouldn't be a driver for it on the gateway site, because windows has keyboard drivers built-in. I would suggest you first try a system restore. If unsuccessful, do a Repair installation. Also check your BIOS for any Keyboard or I/O settings.

If this doesn't help, either Open up your laptop and check the connections. Or if you dont know how, or don't want to void your warranty, send it to gateway... But it will take quite a bit of time to get it back... 6 - 8 weeks, maybe more...

Good luck

Still not working .. I installed it again and tried all of your suggestions and nothing it is the same. The devices with the yellow exclamation marks say that they have conflicts, but I cannot tell with which other devices that they are conflicting. I just don't know what to try next.

Your MT6821 was not made for XP, you might consider going back to Vista, at least Gateway will give you some support w/ Vista, you just aren't going to get ANY support form Gateway so your on your own without Vista, you may not like what I just said, but, at the end-of-the-day, nothing you can really do about it, if you cannot find the correct XP drivers GOOD LUCK!

On the contrary, I like the way you keep it real . Well fortunatelly I am not completely stuck, I have the laptop to dual boot Vista/XP and the vista side is working fine. And the XP is working fine for the most part with a couple of annoyances that I can live with. The pc still does not shut down on its own from xp (the ACPI compiance issue which I am still reasearching to solve) and the 4 in 1 meadia card reader is not working either; it would be nice if this worked, but since it is working on the Vista I am not gonna beat myself over this. Plus with a little bit of reaserch I might be able to find the latest drivers. The other is the LPT1 and LPT3 ports having a conflict but I am guessing this is the printer or serial port and the laptop does not even have any of these; so who cares right?!. By the way I managed to update the BIOS from Vista, when I tried to upgrade the BIOS from XP the laptop completely crashed again with a blue screen. I dont know what that is about but atleast it worked in Vista. So that is where I am unfortunately I need to use XP since VPN client for work is XP specific. Thanks a lot for your comments. Cheers...

You should not have any issues if you install Vista on your comp. It has the needed driver to recognise the drive, if not, it is likely that your drive is bad

cheers ...
