Hardware: Fans + Backlight = dead?

So... after 3 RMA's (artifacts) and 3 long years w/ my 8790, i think it's finally dead.

It slid off my couch the other day onto the floor (carpet) and when i turned it on, the screen was dead. I figured i had broken the backlight (has anyone replaced one of these?) but the other weird thing is that my fans dont turn on either anymore. I plugged in an external monitor, and the machines booting fine, but the fans aren't coming on at all anymore. If i do the Fn-f10 thing, the fans kick into high gear, but as soon as i hit it again, they turn right back off (completely, no spinning)...

anyone have any thoughts on this? i'm officially out of warrenty, but the machine seems to be fine other than the fans (i can live with either an external monitor, or replacing the backlight myself), i just cant figure out how to fix them other than running them on full blast 24/7.


::sigh:: we 8790 owners are few and far between at this point... as a college student who saved for a long time to get this machine, and it has been nothing but a depressing experience...

After a short drop my LCD went blank. I've found that now the screen opened & closed switch that turns the LCD back light on / off on the right hand side near the hinge line needs to be "flicked in order to get the LCD back light to stay on. It sometimes takes several trys but evetually stays lit. I've asked on this forum if there was a procedure for adjusting this switch but no luck yet.
I do not have problems with my fans, blessed me.
Maybe flicking the switch will help with the back light problem.
There is a service manual available for your machine which can help with the backlight lamp replacement if you find that the switch flick doesn't help. It may also help diagnose the fans. The Service manual is about 5.5Mb, very handy manual.

Well if you can turn the fans on wit Fn+F10, then it means they are working. I think your temperature monitor is broken...Have you confirmed that they never turn on by their own, even past 50 degrees?

Also, is your backlight dead or is your whole screen dead? Can you still see the display if you look at it in a well-lit room?

You know... really should have been the first thing i checked eh? i just figured worst case scenario and was so upset about it that i didn't bother looking into it too much further. That being said, i now have a working LCD!!! (my hero!) the fans are still kinda iffy. i went in and reset the bios and after a cold reboot, they kicked right in. I think my troubles are over (after pulling it apart though, i realize the fall broke the lcd hinges on the case... ) edit: where is the service manual btw?
