Just got a TX1000 for my wife...

It cost $1,250 from Sams Club and seems very nice so far - 12" screen, convertable between tablet and laptop mode, 1GB RAM with a 1.86 GHz Turion CPU and (I think) 160GB Hard Drive, built in Lightscribe with all of the usual ports. It comes with a tiny remote control that can be stored in the body of the laptop and has a DVD Drive blanking plate so that the DVD drive can be removed to lighten the load.

The GPU is NVidia 6150 using shared memory, which is a drag, especially since I suspect that the existing RAM will need to be tossed to upgrade to 2GB, but it seems to perform acceptably on Vista Home Premium as it stands.

This is the second one I got... the first one seemed ok but would not recharge after the battery ran out the first time. Even on the second one, the charger does not always make a good connection when it is plugged in; you have to jiggle it a bit to get the blue glow from the power socket.

Any comments from anyone ?

Should I get the extended warranty or will the 6 Months return policy from Sams Club catch any 'normal' HP failures.

Thanks,

I was checking this model out for a replacement for the one my wife currently has (Compaq 3240US). now that you've had it a week how do you like it?

She loves it. She mainly uses it from the couch and the tablet format makes that easy to do, especially if you have a wireless router for internet access.

It took a little while for her to get the hang of it, but the fingerprint logon is really neat.

If you get it from Sams Club (about $1250 plus tax) you can return it within 6 months so it's worth getting it, trying it out and seeing if your missus likes it. It does NOT come with a sample lightscribe CD or DVD so you will need to buy some if you are likely to want to make any CDs or DVDs, but otherwise it is pretty complete.

Have fun.

Happy Birthday to her. My wife loves it although it took her a couple of days to get the hang of it. The only other convertible in the price range is by Gateway, but that is a 14" one and is considerably heavier.

I got the HP for my wife's birthday and (for once) I actually got it for her on time ! However, the first one I got would not recharge and I had to return it (no trouble at all doing so). The second one is a little flaky on charging because the power socket in the computer does not always make a clean connection with the plug. A little wiggling fixes it, but I would suggest getting the extended warranty (from HP, about $350 for 3 years including accidental damage coverage) since I suspect that this is a design flaw. Wiggling the plug in the socket fixes it at the moment, but I think we will one day have to make an irate phone call to HP, which will probably end up in us getting the latest version of this computer, so I'm not too concerned.

My wife's only complaint at the moment is that the screen is not very bright and so it is pretty hard to use in sunlight. In practice, that is not much of an issue since she does not tend to do much computing in the sunlight, but your wife may use it differently.

BTW, as you may notice from my signature, my pc is an older version of yours. It works fine for what I need at the moment. I got it because it was the only mainstream laptop with a Graphics card capable of playing Civ IV properly. It's a little on the HUGE side, but I love it. I got a good deal on it and mine has (so far) not been affected by either the battery or display issues.

I found that Best Buy is selling this laptop for $1,150... however, the version they sell does not have the Touch Screen or the Fingerprint reader and is therefore pretty useless since there is no real tablet mode on it.

My wife loves the fingerprint reader... she complained today about having to type in her User ID and password at the office !
