OS X Question

Thread Starter
When someone buys a new MBP, or any Mac, do you get a copy of the OS?
Yes.

on a restore disk that will only work with near identical models (even a core 2 duo macbook restore disk will not work on a core duo macbook) basically the same thing that most manufacturers do, only slightly more restrictive.
i would say much LESS RESTRICTIVE.

with the exception of dell, most pc companies, well a few years ago, gave images out, not actual OS cd's

has it changed?
ahh, yes i was speaking of dell when i said other companies, i should have been more specific. Dell gives out an OS disk that works on all dells and even a few other comps (my friend used my xp home restore disk that came with my XPS to install on his MBP via boot camp, it even threw in the cd key for him.. however would not activate, and became useless after 30 days), now my moms HP asks you to burn your own disk, which makes an image of the hard drive when it came from the factory, thus re installing HP bloat-ware and modified registry

granted there are limitations on the systems you can install w/ the Mac install discs, however w/ the Mac discs you are actually installing the OS. it's not like other systems where the drive image is simply loaded onto the drive. w/ the Mac install disc, since it's not a restore process, you can choose what apps you want installed. disc image restoration doesn't allow for this.

Precisely, however i should mention, after posting , i investigated the HP restore procedure, and it does allow for removal of SOME bloat-ware (Games, Norton A/V and Quicken seem to be the only removable bloat-ware items, it should also be noted that the version of quicken is actually a full version of the software, not shareware) i am not sure if this is just uninstalling after restoring it, as i have not performed a restore on this particular machine.
