BF1942 DC problems?

On my Sager 8890, BF1942, especially the DC mod, lags like crazy. This is mysteriously fixed when I disable the sound utility in the Ctrl-Alt-Delete screen. I can play it just fine, just without sound and it is very annoying. I know it can handle BF1942 because it handles UT2k4 just fine. Any suggestions?

Is your copy of Battlefield 1942 legit?

Please don't get offended by me asking this but...

Is your copy of Battlefield 1942 legit?
Not Desert Combat, but Battlefield itself.

Just curious, you don't have to tell us.

Why would that change anything? unless its modified or something..

Precisely

That's precisely my point.

An illegitimate (cracked) version of Battlefield 1942 would have modified files which may cause artifacts, horrendous lag, poor gameplay, etc. You can't use bogus serial numbers without patching the executable for this game.

Atremis' issue just initially struck me as a software modification error. But keep in mind that I didn't accuse [him] of it. I simply wrote the first thing that I was thinking when I read the post.

As far as assuming that Battlefield 1942 with Desert Combat being guaranteed to run because Unreal Tournament 2004 can, this isn't really a good comparison. Both of these games run on a different graphic engine.

Assuming your copy of Battlefield 1942 is legit... Have you tried reinstalling it? Have you updated your AC'97 audio drivers? Is this during online multiplayer gameplay or singleplayer campaign missions? Ahh, how often do you defrag? Does your laptop omit any radiation above Orange 2?

You should also check the Desert Combat forums. http://www.forumplanet.com/planetbat.../desertcombat/
A lot of people have the same problems, especially regarding sounds issues. I would also suggest the updating of your AC'97 drivers, as that seems to help a lot of people.

Don't worry, I'm not offended at all. My copy is, in fact, legitimate. I have updated the AC 97 drivers recently, and there seems to be no improvement. This happens in both single player and multiplayer, with and without the DC mod. This is very strange, because I remember the game running like a dream when I first got my 8890. I've even reinstalled windows and defragged, to no avail.

When was the last time you removed the heatsink and cleared out the dust bunnies?

It always comes to this doesn't it?

Hey pyrobob,

It seems like you and I always end up being the ones to talk about the dust bunnies. One would think that people would read other posts sometimes and eventually end up reading one of our posts and get a hint. Perhaps think "Oh, dust bunnies? I've never opened my dust-magnet yet. I wonder if I have an infestation."

I love that phrase "Dust bunnies." Very cute.

People misunderestimate (fav. Bush quote - forgive me) the dust that collects at the heatsink. Just ask Trewin.

Solution (As bad as it sounds)

The problem is that the IRQ values of your sound card and your video card are the same. I believe this happened to my computer when I updated my sound drivers. In Windows XP you are unable to manually change these, to the best of my knowledge (I searched the net for hours on end). I had the same exact problem with bf 1942 on my NP8890...when I disabled the sound it was fixed. In the end I ended up formating my computer and reinstalling windows (I know this seems harsh but it works). By reinstalling windows you are letting it reassign all of the IRQ values and it should work (mine did). You can see that the values are the same by looking in the device manager. And just for your info, my version of bf1942 is legit. Hope it all works out for you.

Try lowering from 44hz to 22hz. Also, if you have the option ENABLE hardware support in sound settings.

I would get HORRIBLE lag with my desktop up until i enabled Hardware support.
