So the other day, my laptop kept getting a blue screen of death. I tried reinstalling windows xp, and kept getting a setup cannot format the partion, the disk may be damaged error and something about checking my SCSI controller. I took it to the techies at school, who told me it was my ram. I took out the 512 stick in the slot (notebook has 256mb internal nonremoveable) and whoa and behold, the laptop worked and I reinstalled windows xp fine. I bought a new 512mb stick, and the same problem occurred. Only this time, the computer would just boot to the windows loading screen and then loop and do it again and again. If I take the stick out, computer works fine. I returned the stick of ram for another brand, Kingston, and had the same issue. The laptop is an emachines m2350. Weird thing is, when I go into the bios it detects the 512 stick of memory in there and shows that I have it. It will not go into windows at all, however. I tried many different things, and do not know what is wrong with it. I've installed ram numerous times before on other laptops/desktops and all you do is pop it in right? Theres no necessary install process with this notebook?

Try memtest86+ on the stick you got:
http://www.memtest.org/
You may have simply got a bad stick. You don't have to run two identical sticks. I have been running two completely different sticks for quite some time with no issues. As long as it is the correct voltage, speed (a faster speed is ok, it is backward compatible), and type, you are good to go. I have been upgrading machines for a LONG time, and rarely run into any compatibility issues between brands,as long as they are spec'ed properly. That machine is based on the Arima W730-k7 series, which may suffer form the same problem some of the w730-k8's do ... they are VERY finicky about voltage. Make certain it is 2.5v, and not 2.6v RAM.
