Dell 1705 with 4GB RAM. good news and bad news, question for other 4gb ram user

good news is the memory cost only $358 per 2GB stick from Dell, I order two of them under another system model it it work in my e1705. the bad news is the system bios recognized it all 4GB but only allow the system 3.25GB RAM to be use. my questions is

anyone out there have a Dell system with 4GB RAM ? what do you see under the bios?

Also since it can only recognize 3.25GB RAM, can I use 2GB stick on one slot and 1GB stick on the other slot or it have to be the same pair size to get the best perform out of it ?

edit: look like this explain very well

I will run 3GB for now

You need a 64 bit OS to address the full 4 gb of ram. Which sucks because your CPU is not x64 capable .

You can't get use out of all 4 gigz, I'd suggest you sell the 2nd 2GB stick and buy a single gig stick to replace it. Dual Channel won't matter here, I used to have dual 512mb sticks and then switched to 1gb stick and 1 512mb stick and it runs far faster even though I questioned the Dual Channel thing as well.

I have 4GB Memory in my system and the Bios read same as your
- My CPU does capable of 64 bit but i currently run with Vista Ultimate 32 bit and of course my system not not read full 4GB of memory
- I think you can install 2GB + 1GB but must be the same 677Mhz bus in order to run dual channel
- I did not notice any difference from 2 GB and 4 GB memory if you want 4 GB so think it before you get it

C4D: They do not have to only be at the same bus speed, but same stick size as well. Dual Channel isn't really a giant performance boost so it doesn't matter in this case.

look like alot of people having issued with Dell allow 4gb RAM to be use. if the bios recognize 4GB ram and only release 3325MB for system to be use, it won't matter if you are running 32bit or 64 bit OS since bios will only allow 3325MB to be use

at this point, it is not OS issue.... look at my bios screen shot

If you do a forum search, you will see that this has been discussed before, in extenso. Bottom line: No, you will not be able to use all of the 4GB, no matter what OS you run (32 or 64bit).

P.S.: This problem is not specific to Dell.

I have yet to use all of my 2Gb running some pretty RAM intense apps. Not to say you wont ever need 4GB but when the time comes for its use, there will be faster speeds and lower latencies so your money was wasted on something you didnt really need at the moment.
The latencies havent changed in quite awhile and the speed is most likely gonna be determined due to your fsb...Anyway, yeah I have 2 gb and havent managed to use it all yet but I've gotten close once

I run two virtual and PC and game... I did max out on my 2GB and use alot of swap space

Repeat after me:

This is a Microsoft problem!

It is a limitation in Windows that Microsoft put there because of the possibility of an attacker to use the memory beyond 3.2GB to execute malicious code. Instead of actually fixing the problem, they cracked an egg in the radiator and just cut you off from using a full 4GB.

stop quickly blame on Microsoft.... look at this blog below and it make sense to me and it is clearly a hardware design. if BIOS only allow me 3.25GB then it won't matter what OS I use... I load Linux to test it and it still show 3.25gb http://www.interact-sw.co.uk/iangblo...05/is3gbenough

...most people don't run 2VM's as well as a game at the same time. I can run every single office app I've have as well as Maya, PS, as well as COH running and don't use the entire 2 GB.

I know some used Photoshop and it eat up the 2GB quickly.... you are right normal users don't use more then 1GB ram, but there are enought people out there who need more then 2GB ram
post #15 of 37
PS eat 2GB quickly? I am running PS CS3 & it is quite conservative on RAM. I've had several camera-raw images with additional filter plug-ins & have not used all 2GB.

...Of course if you stress test it you cn blow away 2 GB...or even 3. the point is that people rarely need more than 2GB, esp on a laptop. If you need that much power you should be using a desktop...If you need that much A/V power you should be running a Mac.

Very good link, thanks a lot. It is a PCI bus issue with the current motherboards. I've heard somewhere that Santa Rosa will solve this specific issue.

Nonsense. The above is a silly fairytale, brought about, as far as I can tell, by people who have difficulty understanding the technical information in certain KB articles at MS. As I said above, this limitation has nothing whatsoever to do with Microsoft, and it will exist, on the kind of hardware we are talking about, for any operating system, 32bit or 64bit.

read this...hopefully this will make it clear....

I doubt it, since none of this applies to the laptops we have been talking about here. The /PAE switch does nothing for these. Once again, this is a limitation of the motherboard/chipset design, and there is no way around it.

I thought I read somewhere that 64 Bit XP and Vista would work for 4 GB memory or more at least on some Desktop Mother Boards
