Will a Core Duo laptop preform better than P4 desktop?

Will a core duo 1.8 preform better than my P4 3.0? How much better in %? I don't know if I should go with Core Duo and save some money or go with C2D for now. OH and if anyone is bored... can you explain to me what is going on in the bottom portion of the task manager... I don't really understand all of those specs.

core duo 1.8
2gb
5400rpm

vs

p4 3.0
1gb
7200rpm

Here is a picture of my computer running some normal tasks and it's always sluggish. Note I might not have 1-2 of these apps running on a normal basis but usually most of them are. Decrypter always makes my computer 40-50% slower

Yes, and for sure.
core duo 1.8 is probably better than Pentium 4 3.6

Yes but how big is the HD on the notebook and on the desktop? Are you talking about Core Duo 1.83 ghz, or Core 2 Duo 1.83 ghz? Yes the CD or the C2D will be faster, but I've heard that P4s perform pretty well in video editing/and other "resource hog" apps

both hd's 80gb.

I finally got Max 8 installed on my P4 Desktop and you are right. It does seem to preform pretty well... I'm not sure what I use at school though... They don't seem as smooth... but they're newer computers. I'll have to check that out. I guess I'm just curious to know if the dual core's will work better.

My desktop is a P4 3.0GHz 7200 80gb HD... It really doesn't seem as fast as I want it to be.. maybe I should get another gig of ram. OH and a kick ass ati X300 SE... that's good right?

well as far as super pi scores go my 3.2ghz northwood pentium 4 does the 2m calculation in 1 min 49 secs where my 1.73ghz pentium M does this in 1 min 45secs so yeah its a lot faster and more effecient too.

my T7600G @ 2.33 pulls in at 54 seconds

@3.16 I got 50 seconds

The dual core will perform better in windows applications, however, atm the Pentium should perform better in most games as these only use one thread. New games will use more threads to exploit multi core processors (ie. Half Life Episode 2)

The Core Duo or Core 2 Duo will perform faster on a lot of occasions than the P4. It is because of the P4's NetBurst architecture that takes a lot of cycles to process the information therefore being slower than the Core based CPU's. Basically any Turion, AMD64, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo will be faster than the P4.

i'm pretty sure the core 2 duo would be faster in almost any case.

the only reason i can see the p4 faster is when the processors are working on individual processes. the p4 is much faster in that respect. the core 2 duo was designed for the user that multitasks splitting the work on two cores to perform faster.

to simply answer the question: core 2 duo is faster 99 % of the time

exaclty what Im saying: up till now games were optimized to run as efficient as possible on one processor. That means that it will only ever use one core and the second one will be "bored". Its like having five people to write a report, but there is only one pen... Only one person will be able to contribute to the report. New games are starting to be multithreaded e.g. Hald Life 2 Episode 2 But yes, in general windows applications the core duo will perform a better job (especially on linux )

FYI-SuperPI only uses 1 core. The only use for superPI(dual core is running 2 instances for stability testing..

The C2D blows away the P4 with just one core... on MT apps well it just takes it a bit further

also, that 2gb of ram is going to help a lot more in making the computer run more smoothly, especially based on your screenshot of your memory usage.

and the 61 processes running...ewwww...... Time for a fresh install!
