Asus C90

I think the Asus C90 has DX10 and Santa Rosa because according to some of my sources, Santa Rosa/DX10 are supposed to offer HDMI in every laptop with them included as you can see in the following picture the C90 sports an HDMI port among many others.

Here's the whole article

it certainly looks that way, especially considering the mid-may release date.

yeah plus the fact that they said that Asus told them not to tell

Asus C90

Hey surely everyone's seen the upcoming Asus C90 that's to be released in May (if not look towards the bottom of this post). So what do you guys think about it? Do you think it'll be a kick arse laptop? I mean Conroe? Duh! It's like that new Clevo except affordable and bulky as hell. Which nVidia DX10 card do you think it'll have? I mean it is a 15.4 inch laptop.

i thought C90s is desktop version.. Santa Rosa is for mobile platform
post #6 of 73
The c90 supposedly will support desktop c2duo chips not Santa Rosa... this paired with MXM video card.

Someone once brought up the fact that it's going to be very power hungry and have terrible battery life because it's not a mobile chip.

It does look sweet though!

According to Laptop Magazine, the Asus C90 receives about 81 minutes of battery life while on "Quiet Mode". But when the C90 is kicked into "Gaming Mode" it overclocks the processor from 2.4Ghz to 2.93Ghz (or at least that's what I gathered from the article) and receives a mere, shoddy, disheartening 14 minutes of battery life. *starts a hungry man to eat when the battery runs out*.

I was wonderin' what's the build quality of typical asus notebooks like? I've never seen anyone with one and I haven't seen many reviews for them. In addition, which online companies do you think are the best when you want to order an Asus with a more-than-one year warranty?
Build quility varies with different models. From what I've read, the V (and VX) series seem to have the most consistently high build quality over the last couple years. The W series is generally pretty good (although the W3J had a lot of complaints about overheating). My Z71v has been through a lot of bumps and bruises, and it runs fine. The G series has gotten high marks in build from user reviews. The A series is more hit or miss, with the newer A8 notebooks seeming to hold up better than than the slightly older ones. The A6 and A7 series with AMD processors have had somewhat significant problems. Most of the barebones of the last year or so have been around average build quality. On an x/10 rating, I'd say overall,

V & VX series: 9/10
W series: 8.5/10
G series: 7/10
2004-2005 barebones: 6.75/10
2006-present barebones: 5.5/10
A series (Intel): 5/10
A series (AMD): 3.5/10

For reference, an average Dell would be between 5/10 and 6/10 over the same time period

mind you, I've only owned one Asus and I'm taking the rest of my ratings from various comments in the forums or in reviews that stuck in my head. I have only actually handled my Z71v and a G1 at Best Buy.

oh well that sounds promising I'm just hoping that I can get a C90 for about $1600-$1700. I mean it's a great computer and it's REALLY powerful. Since the C90 supports a Conroe processor does that mean that it can use 1066MHz memory? In which case, I would buy desktop memory instead of laptop memory?
I don't know much about memory; is 1066 MHz considered a high or low value for memory? I'm guessing this laptop won't be practical for a college student because of the anticipated low battery life? Why can't asus just put bigger cell batteries in the C90 to increase the battery life?

Well allow me to answer your questions in order... 1. Yes 1066MHz or 1.066GHz is a very high voltage for memory considering laptops today use anywhere from 533MHz to 800MHz. 2. Asus can't add a bigger cell battery in the C90 because normally batteries are located in the back, in this particular computer that's where the fans lie so that rules the back out. Otherwise, the battery could be in the front and be extended I suppose, but that you would be a heat problem that no one would like; you wouldn't only have sweaty palms you'd have melting palms!

p.s.: it's frequency, not voltage

notebook memory frequencies have ranged over the last few years from 333 Mhz to 400 Mhz, 533 Mhz, 667 Mhz, & 800 Mhz. 1066 Mhz is pretty fast for notebook RAM, at least right now. Within a year or two, 1333 Mhz will be the standard.

Thanks for answering my questions 5750FTW. If they plan to keep building up the RAM frequencies, they better get some big ass fans lol.

no problem and yes Djembe you are correct (as always) it is referred to as frequency not voltage. Well the Asus C90 has 4 fans so I think they're good as far as cooling goes.

Hmm I just realized that since the Asus C90s supports Conroe processors, that means that it uses the LGA 775 Chipset. I also noticed that the Quad-Core processor (QX6700) uses the LGA775, so does that mean that I could put a Quad-Core processor in this bad boy?
If you're correct in that assumption, I don't see why not.

lol nice, I talked to some guy from Milestone PC, apparently, I can't get a C90S with the following specs for between $1500-$1600.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo Conroe 2.4GHz 4MB Cache
Graphics: nVidia Geforce Go 8600 (GS, GTS, GTS Ultra)
Memory: 2GB 667MHz
Hard Drive: 100GB 7200 RPM
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
Warranty: 2 year Asus global warranty

which sucks, maybe I'll have to downgrade the processor

yeah, the CPU is probably your best bet to downgrade, as it'll make the least amount of difference. And I'd imagine that you'd be able to put 800 Mhz RAM in due to the newer technology, but that's just my speculation.
