Apple announces Leopard delays due to the iPhone

Apple has just issued a press release statement announcing that Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard has been delayed until October. The reason? iPhone: "we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned." However, Apple will still be displaying a "feature complete" version of Leopard at June's WWDC event, and will be giving beta versions for developers to take home and help put the finishing touches on.

This is a pretty significant announcement, especially considering that Apple has fallen under criticism as of late for dropping 'Computer' from their name and seemingly shifting their focus from computers to consumer devices such as the iPod, Apple TV and now Mac OS X-delaying iPhone. In a way though, I'm not surprised either, as a number of Mac OS X developers have expressed disbelief that Apple was going to hit a June release with Leopard in its currently buggy and fairly unfinished state.

On the bright side, this hopefully can be taken as a sign that Apple is still committed to releasing quality software, even if slightly late this time around. The company could simply have shipped in June and issued 'Service Pack 1' later to patch all the gaping holes their customers found. But that wouldn't be very Apple, would it?

IMO stooping to to Microsoft's level would mean releasing it now and leaving us to fend for ourselves with a buggy os.

Its not like they are rewriting the OS. Vista was a bit more involved than osx has been in the past. (Panther to Tiger) They want to impress me put it on a new kernel or something. a few apps and tabbed terminal *whopdy do* Granted they do stuff right the 1st time but thats what I am getting at here get your date right the 1st time. Breaking release dates is something M$ does, NOT apple.

I see apple shifting away from computers here trying to give their iphone some undivided attn. If they choose that path it may be their undoing.

lol. I agree. I'd rather wait and have a bug free Leopard, then get it in May and have it buggy. But this does kinda suck. I just saw the videos of Leopard and "Time Machine" is awsome

But see, no one knows yet what exactly is going to be in the finished version of Leopard. Jobs still hasn't unveiled those supa top-sekret features he promised us. Those could be any number of super complex and advanced things.

If this was Microsoft they would promise us one date and then three months after they'd promise us a new date a year later and then three months after that promise another date.

Apple at least was good enough to come to us, several months before the date, and say "hey, we needed to divert some resources so this is gonna be late."

I don't think Apple is shifting away from computers any more than Sony shifted to TVs and Computers and VCRs from their original tape recorders and radios.

The iPhone is going to be one of those make it or break it type things...more so than the iPod ever was. I don't fault Apple for wanting to make it as bug free and usable as possible before it gets into the hands of the consumer. Also, right now, as the future of the iPhone is completely up in the air, I don't blame Apple for not having a huge team dedicated to working on it.

Tiger is working just fine for everyone so Apple has the luxury of delaying Leopard so they can work on the iPhone.

I agree with Kakaze.

The moment the iPhone was shown/announced, manufacturers such as Samsung and LG were rushing to bring out touch-screen based cell phone and are trying hard to beat the iPhone to market. It has become crucial for Apple to stick to a June launch of the iPhone at all costs.

And seeing as Vista isn't exactly flying off the shelves, it makes more sense for them do just what they did.

I am a little disappointed as I was planning on purchasing a MBP preloaded with Leopard before the summer but I'm glad they will be taking extra time in hopes for a smoother and successful launch of the new OS, something that MSFT missed with Vista; being late to market yet at the same time too early to market from the number of bugs present.

that, and apple tends to make decisions about the quality of their own product(s) rather than what MS is doing. i.e.-Vista sales may have less to do w/ their decision than the increasing sales that Macs continue to enjoy while "still" using Tiger.
