E1405 Beats M1710 -Memory performance

Just updated my E1405 to Vista, checked out the Experience index & was surprised wnen I scored 4.9 with my E1405 memory ops/sec & 4.7 on the 1710 in my sig...

Any ideas lol?

1405

2.16GHz-T2600
2 GB -Dell RAM
100GB 7200RPM HDD
Integrated graphics

You should be thankful I get 4.5 with 667Mhz Ram.

maybe we've underestimated the dell ram jk

Does one have 533 ram as opposed to 667? I seem to recall the timings being tighter on the 533 ram, which might help in whatever benchmark is used to rate the "vista experience".

I pulled the ram on both machines & they were identical so I am still trying to figure it out lol.

Took it a steop further, swapped RAM on both machines & got the same scores...hmmm.....

It likely has to do with the memory controller on the motherboard... I wonder if there is a difference between chipsets?

Try running a synthetic benchmark (SisSoft Sandra or such) on both machines and see what they give for memory index scores?

alright...Ran Sandra on both machines (both running Vista)

1710 Memory Benchmark:

SSE2 (int):3,913 MB/sec
SSE2 (flt):3,934 MB/sec

74% bandwidth eff

1405:

SSE2 (int): 3,654 MB/sec
SSE2 (flt): 3,934 MB/Sec

69% bandwidth eff

Tests under XP provided the same results

I get 4.6 on my 6400 with PC4200 ram

Thats kind of odd... well if you want to look at the raw performance data that is created by the assessment test, navigate to the C:\Windows\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore\ folder and open the latest dated test on both machines. Scroll through each XML file to see the actual performance numbers Vista uses to score your system. The memory section will have something like this in it...

<MemoryMetrics>
<Bandwidth units="MB/s">3087.18823</Bandwidth>

</MemoryMetrics>

There are more values to look through in the file so take your time with it and let it all sink in

what do you get in Sandra?

WEI has serious issues. I ran it again & got 4.9 on my mem score by increasing to max CPU OC. I think the experince index is hosed.

I have a nearly identical e1705 with the 667 ram and I too only get 4.5 on the WEI, I would be very pissed if 533 is better then my 667. I dont know why the ram isn't giving a 4.9!

this might be a stupid suggestion but did you look into the bios and checked the settings there? Did you upgrade the bios on both machines?

I dont know much about Vista, as Im mostly sitting on my Linux machine, but maybe the other machine is running more processes ?

both machines are identical clean installs, both machines have the latest BIOS updates, both machines have identical ram. it seems WEI just has issues. Other benchmarking programs have no problem testing the memory & give more accurate & expected results.

I belive MS just created an inefficient benchmarking program (is anyone really surprised)...
it wouldnt really surprise me...

just try using another benchmarking program to be sure...

I did use annother one & the 1710 was a better performer. the results are in one of my above posts.
