USB flash stick problems

OK this is a weird problem. I have a 256MB BTC USB flash memory. It took a few shocks during his lifetime but always survived. Aprox. 1 month ago it started not working anymore. I had to flex it, take it out and put it back in order for the computer to recognize it. Since the plastic shell cracked a long time ago (ups ) I was able to rip it apart. It isn't rocket since: 2 memory chips, 1 controller chips and a few small electronic parts. Thought what the hell maybe a solder got ripped after a hit or something, so I checked with a microscope the whole stick.
Yes you guessed it, no loose soldering. The interesting thing is then I tried it one more time when I started flexing the stick (because the LED didn't turned on so I thought its a loose contact), it became so hot I couldn't touch it.
Anyone has any idea what could be wrong with it. I know it's only 256 MB but i wanted to fix it to give it to friend. (since then I bought a 2GB one )
THX, any help, idea, suggestion (crazy thing to do with a burned out stick) would be really apriciated.

most likely its been beaten up too much, all flash memory is rated at certin g's (g force) and if it hits it causes corruption, misalignment ect, not only that but flash memory sticks is like....

overclocking you want great name brand, if the 256 stick was a no name brand, then it prolly went poof the first time you droped it....

see if theres a life time warranty i know some have them or limited lifetime warranty of the product

Well ..no warranty will change a physically damaged thing. anyway now I take more care of my new one. I don't keep it with on my keys anymore and I choosed a metal case on: Sandisk Cruzer Micro 2GB (actually this one was on special offer ).
