Media/Gaming Laptop

Thread Starter
Budget: £1600 (UK)

Important Factors:

- Ram: Hoping to get one with 2GB

Willing to compromise:

- Portability: So long as its not a lead brick then I'm OK.

- Battery Life: 2 - 3 Hours would be nice

What I would use it for:

- Playing games (Some High end ones)

- Watching TV

Ideal laptop:

Doesn't have to be extreme top of the range but if it was powerful and portable then I'd be happy.

Willing to use: Vista/XP/Mac OS

------------

Thanks for your help in advance.

Also - Would I be better waiting for the Crestline Series from Intel to use DirectX10?

Maybe look at the Compal HEL80 b/c it has the built in TV tuner but there are many laptops that can meet your requirements in your price range
post #3 of 14
Well, I never like watching TV on Pcs as generally the image quality looks bad compared to TVs...

Well, As far as I know, if you want a build in TV tuner, then you probably have to go with a 17 inch + laptop... Try hp dv9000t or Asus G2

not true with current cpu's they are ratted at lower watts and produce way less heat than they use to (IE prescott)

battery life suffers with a desktop proc in a laptop, thats the only true downside, but when someone buys a lappy with a desktop proc its because they intend on using it for what its for, desktop replacement (typicaly these days you can get a lappy with a desktop proc and get sli, high end video 4 gigs of ram ect ect, a desktop killer)

3.4 Ghz does sound like an ideal over heat candidate... Anyway, go at least ofr a dual core...

yep it does, but current proc's (as in c2d and amdx2 ect) actually dont overheat that well at all

but the mobiles are better suited for portability, if OP isnt gonna lug his lappy around and keep it stationary i say go for a DTR, keep in mind tho a good/decent one will run you well over 2k

Many thanks guys xD

I might wait to see if Santa Rosa hits the ground and what price it is (As the battery life saving is a nice aspect) but if not the ones you have put forward are my must haves :P
post #10 of 14
Yes I would wait for Santa Rosa too. Mostly because you want 2-3 battery life, and most gaming/multimedia powerhouses don't get that much.

Well after alot of searching - I came across this laptop from PC Nextday:

http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/products/...Code=3385-5005

Seems ideal - Only problem is the 256mb of Video Ram

Are PC Nextday a good company to do business with?

just buy sager for the same price.

Have you had a look at the asus G-series? The G1 has similar (2.00Ghz processor but WSXGA screen) specs to the zoostorm but has 512MG of video ram (Nvidia 7700).

...Pc in my specs.... when I'm not gaming I get 2.5 hours of battery life.

Santa Rosa will be nice for people that are not serious gamers. The DX10 video card solutions will remain mediocre at best for quite some time. desktop 8600 cards can't even beat out the current 7600 series cards. I can't imagine how bad the performance will be on the underclocked laptop versions.

The laptop you were looking at-

using Core Duo proc (2 Yonah cores on one chip) no EMT64 support. It's the previous generation chip.
T7600 is not a great card if you are really into gaming

4900-3DMark05
2800-3DMark06

Take a look at that to see jsut how powerful that 7600 go is compared to the stock 7950 as well as the 7950 in my sig below.
