Are you able to set the fan speed with the i8kfan utility? Also, are you able to tell which fan is not spinning as it should? I'm guessing it might be the processor fan since the CPU is being throttled back, but I've learned the hard way not to assume things with computers.

I have since reinstalled vista and updated drivers and kept processes to about 50 and now it fluctuates between 3-12% at idle....so success, but fan 1 on i8kfangui still runs way more than under xp...have no explanation for that...

I'm not sure what fan is fan 1, but if it's controlled by the temp of the vid card, it may be that Vista is keeping your GPU more active with the aero interface than XP does with it's classic GUI.

Usually Fan0 is the CPU and Fan1 is the video card on a notebook. If you have an nVidia video card on the system, you might try the nTune utility (http://www.nvidia.com/object/sysutility.html<o></o>) to see if that will help with the one fan running higher.

okay, I have a new xps-m1710 and I've had huge problems with display drivers. Only ones I can get to work properly with my system is the Dell ones. I thought I was having an overheating issue so I installed i8kfangui to monitor my temperatures. Ever since then the system fans don't turn on when needed. I've tried playing around with the different settings, everything from Show temperatures only/no fan control, to adjusting when the fans come on at which temps. Nothing worked. Another odd thing, when I select Force fans to high speed it runs fully for 2 seconds, slows down minutely for a fraction of a second, then back to full. It loops like that. Reading the posts it seems like others with M1710s are having problems with this as well. Is it not supported? And is there something else to use just to monitor temperatures?

I'm running Vista and everything runs like when I was on XP. Fan on right side running is actually good if you ask me. I set it on High even at idle, left on low.
