E1705 with M1710 conversion, black trim/keyboard and my cooling setup

SOLD PALMREST WITH BLACK TRIM AND GOT THE STOCK M1710 palmrest, I get tired of looks fairly quick... I put the decal of bulldog where the palmrest usually gets discolored. Next in line is painting the palmrest and power board glossy black, to make exactly the opposite effect from M170 / Gen 2. get it?

I also put in a 512mb quadro that I got off ebay for $150

specs of my e1705

core 2 duo T7200
2gigs of 667mhz ram
160GB Hitachi 5400rpm
Quadro 2500M 512MB 575/1400 clock to match 7950GTX
WUXGA
DVDRW
Dual boot Windows XP and Vista Ultimate
Targus X Laptop Stand
2 x 90mm fans with control knobs. They keep my 2500M at 72 degrees at full load (internal fans on slow), and they are super quiet, generate less noise than internal fans on high.

Enjoy the pics!

Was it tough to do the XPS cover switchout? I am thinking of doing the same....

no not at all... well, I did the conversion on my old 9300 too, so I've done it couple of times.
Once those 8 screws are removed, and the lcd front panel goes off, there is another 8 screws to be removed and the LCD is out. I'd say it takes about 30 minutes or less for the whole operation.
The tough part is finding a good cover on Ebay or buying it brand new from DELL for some $120... and on Ebay they go for about 90 with shipping, most of them scratched.
I got lucky and got my in perfect condition for $52... no scratches, but it didn't have the leds, which I didn't care about anyway.

hope this helps.

damn, can't get any input on this, I guess it's not that great of a color combination after all...

M1710 black LCD cover cost 52 shipped

That's total cost of $77.

I'm working on another project too... I have an extra palmrest that came from M90. I already sanded it and prepped it for paint... I will paint it glossy black, while I paint the side trim silver. Then I will paint the part of power panel glossy black too. The plan is to achieve exactly opposite color effect from the Gen 2. What's black is silver and what's silver is black

Hi, I have just put an M1710 palmrest on my I9400. But the XPS logo on the mouse pad isn't working. Is there a setting somewhere to switch this on ?

Cheers
Dan.

Dan, there is no way to do this on E1705, I wasted many days looking for the solution and no luck. For some reason it works on 9300... weird.

Thanks for the info
I am thinking of changing my motherboard so then hopefully it will work. Will see though.
Cheers
Dan.

Quality work. Original white sides look better though.

hellstrider189,

Great job.I wanted to ask you a question?Do the screw holes of the M1710 palmrest line up with the screw holes of the Inspiron 9400 base?Or did you have to mod it to fit?

Hellsrider189,I thought the XPS top palmrest assembly had to be modded to if the Inspiron 9400/E1705 base? I think I dremeled a few of the mounting posts off the palmrest and epoxied them to the correct location. Only thing that's still unresolved are the led's next to the power button. They are all shifted one to the left, since the XPS hingecover doesn't have the MediaDirectCrap button like the E1705 did. No biggie.. ..Just wish the XPS on the LCD cover was wired and lit.......any luck with the wiring mod? "
