Price checks

okay im noticing this popping up more and more all the time here. especially (i would assume) as the university year comes to an end and students are looking to unload their machines and upgrade for over the summer. to that end i am not sure what to tell these people both in general and in the brand sections when i see them asking. most of the threads could easily be mistaken for sale posts if it wasnt for them asking for what others would value the machines at.

if not it doesnt violate the rules in regards to the for sale section in practice it at least in some ways is violating the intent of the new rules in place regarding the way that people sell here. an unlimited ability to post price checks amounts ot an ability to post adverts for things outside of the for sale section and thus to avoid the typical rules regarding it.

anyone else have an opinion on the situation?

I see it too a lot, and I think it depends on the post, if there is any inference that they want to know if anyone would like their system, it goes to for sale...but I think questioning the value of a system in the computers technical section should be allowed because if they want to sell on ebay for example it would be helpful for them to have an appropriate asking price.

Some of it has merit but if there is a blatent spam I would just temp ban the person with only a single warning.

Whoops, didn't see this. Have just sent out PM to the other Dell mods on this very issue.... I f**king hate these price check threads and I am getting tired of deleting/ moving/ etc them as more often than not they turn into a Sale thread.

I know that a a lot start as innocent price checks, but I really think that they are better suited to the For Sale section (and a lot of the time will get a better idea of what it is worth from there anyways).

Consulting with the others, but my preferred approach will be to modify current sticky and let everyone know that Price check threads should also be posted in the For Sale section, and if posted elsewhere in the Dell section would be moved or deleted as appropriate. Only downside is the min post count needed to create a thread in that section, but I think it is well worth it.

Speaking on behalf of the For Sale section mods, I do NOT want price checks there. They clutter up the place and are the quickest way to start flame wars. I have been telling people in the For Sale section that price checks are okay in the brand sections. If you're not okay with them, we need a new plan that will hopefully work out okay for everyone.

Well at the moment I have redirected there. They should not be in the brand sections because more often than not they turn into sale threads or whatever, it causes problems and people avoid the post limit set for sales.

Perhaps then the Sale board should get an offshoot specifically for price checks?

So, reform the for sale section to a "Marketplace" and have the traditional for sale, reseller section, deals/coupons, and price checks?
Maybe there could be one forum for Sales, one forum for WTB, and another forum for various deals/coupons and price checks? There's already a reseller section, but maybe it could be more closely tied in with the "Marketplace" forums?

that has been suggested by folks in the FS section before. I'm unsure of whether that would be helpful or just lead to more flame wars.

On a side note, if you see a price check you don't want in your section, please either send it to Notebook General or delete it, as I will either delete or send back to you price checks that I find in FS/Wanted

..well, I won't send them to you now, but I have before.

maybe I'll make a poll about it.

OK, for now I am going to either delete or send to Notebook general depending. But I do think that some kind of offshoot/ marketplace setup would work best long-term (refer Admin board).

i think that would be a good idea but even then there should be a post limit since as has been pointed out there are alot of issues regarding people avoiding the limits set since most price check threads turn into sale threads.

All price checking and for sale threads are available only to premium NBF members for a yearly $35 fee. This also includes access to exclusive skins, a yellow name tag, higher rep hit value, larger 300 message PM box and Duke thread filter.

So who do I pay to make this happen?!

I actually like this concept, though.

You mean the "ignore" function wasn't implemented because of Duke?
no, although some might think so. He's not that annoying to me (most of the time), though. There's only one person whose posts bother me so much that I put them on ignore, and he's since been banned, so now I hardly ever have to worry about it.

Gotcha. He doesn't really bug me either, but I don't post anywhere he does . Nonetheless, it would be really funny if one of the Admins would change the ignore button to the "Shut up Duke" button for a day

* Wonders if a poll should be made in OT *
