How much of 4Gb is actually available on a 1705

Hi All,

I have been doing som reading and some searching, but I cannot find a definitive answer to my question.

I'm considering upgrading from 2 Gb to 4 Gb RAM in my 1705 as I often run a few heavily loaded virtual machines at the same time. Currently running a T7200, so running x64 is not a problem.

Can anyone tell me first hand how much RAM is available to the OS when running x64 or x86? I hear it maxes out at 3.3 Gb (which is still almost 1.5 Gb over my current 2Gb). But as far as I know thats only guesswork. As the two sticks are still quite expensive I'd really like to know for sure. a screenshot confirming the availability would be great!

Is the chipset really the limiting factor?

Im looking to run either XP x64, Server 2003 x64 or (if I have to) Vista x64. I'm fine with x86 too, but that would definately impose a limit on memory usage...

Thanks all!

I am 90% sure that the 3.3G (approx) is correct. It's either the BIOS or chipset that doesn't see more...

upgrade to 3GB, 4 GB will do nothing for you with this chipset.

3.25Gb, and it's the chipset (it's a PCI problem, with 32-bit PCI devices). Santa Rosa will supposedly fix this.
