Radeon 320M Vista

Thread Starter
When I try to install my drivers for my Radeon320m, I get a message saying not enough resources to run and it uses VGAsave as my backup video device and I only get a 1.0 in the video ratings. Vista has a built in driver for the 320m, but it does not work. I tried reading other forums and posts and running the driver install in compatability mode, but no such luck :-(

And there are no bios updates for the ArimaK7 I asked the manufacturer Arima and the computer company, Emachines.

How Much Memory do you have in your system? 1GB? 512MB? you need at least 2GB of Memory, that's the Sweet Spot for Vista, as it is a Resources & Ram Hog.......also you should try and uninstall the Video Drivers, (ALL OF THEM, Microsoft XDDM & ATI Radeon 320m) then re-install them again.........try that and post back your results, if you are running less than a 1GB of Ram............well...... I think you know the answer to that question?

Well if you must run Vista you'll need 2GB of Memory.........if you're running XP 1GB should work just fine.......so that's the bottom line, did your system ship with XP or Vista? also where did you get the Vista Version from? was it a Gateway/Emachine Xpress Vista Upgrade? are did you go out and buy a Retail version of Vista? You didn't give much info about your system? How old is it, did you run the Vista Upgrade advisor? does your system even support Vista? not much to go on here..........?

The system upgrade advisor told me I was fine to run vista. My machine originally came with Windows Xp Professinal SP2. If Vista needs 2gb,then why do computers that they sell in the store come with only 512mb but still have Vista preinstalled on them?

Maybe Vista Basic Systems ship w/ 512MB of Ram, I have never seen ANY Vista Home, Business, or Ultimate Version Systems being sold w/ anything less than 1GB, like I said 2GB is always better in light of most Systems being sold w/ (Shared Video Memory) Dedicated Video RAM is always better than Shared......according to what I see on the ATI Website, it appears that the Radeon 320m aren't supported in Vista, that Radeon 320m isn't even listed ANYWHERE on the ATI website under Video Drivers? have you tried to update the chipset drivers? being that Microsoft has Vista driver support? what about a BIOS update for your System?

what bios version do u currently have? might want to look under another manufacturer (medion MD 40072) that has the same footprint and board of arima K7

I have to check on the bios version, but I know it is an Arima K7 board (emachines m2350). I emailed both emachines and arima, and they both told me there is no bios update. Can you further explain why I might be able to find another bios update from a different manufacturer that might work? I'm only assuming my problem with a vista driver is because of the bios, which is what I've read when researching other peoples threads and on different sites. Its weird cuz Vista seems to run pretty smooth on the laptop too except when it comes to video junk.

I don't think it's the BIOS, I just installed Vista Home Premium on a 3 year old Gateway 7405GX Notebook, and it works great, my Vista Base Score was a 3.1...... and it only has 64MB of dedicated Video Ram it's a Radeon 9600/9700 , but it also has 2GB of DDR 2700 Ram in it as well, I don't have a new BIOS update, I'm using a 2005 BIOS that shipped w/ the notebook and it works fine w/ Vista.............did you try and update the chipset drivers? sometimes you need to update the northbridge/southbridge on the chipset for the Video Drivers to work on older Systems ,so give that a try, what have you got to lose at this point?.......................Good Luck

bios updates r being requested from laptop manufacturers if they feel there is a need for it, and the manufacturers (laptop builders) differ from one to another

arima boards have been sold to many laptop manufacturers, u just have to dig around for any models that come close to urs and verify bios version number and see. But my personal take is that unless the bios version starts with the same letter, i would not not bother to touch it. In the case of the example MD 40072, the bios version is currently at MExxx - check it against ur version and see

vista gpu support issue can be due to bios version, gpu driver version, chipset driver and among many others things but ...

it has a lot to do with laptop manufacturers drivers keeping up to date with vista (OS) and not (most of the time) the other way around. So unless the latest drivers have the "vista compatibility" label, u r pretty much on ur own. So far the old AMD based gateway/emachines seem to hold up VERY well under vista.

cheers ...

Could it be that I only had 768mb of ram when I installed Vista? I upgraded the lappie to a full gig since then (reinstalled windows xp) but I really want to experiment with Vista. I am too scared to try a bios update in case it ruins the computer!

Guess you'll never really know unless you try? in light of the fact that you really didn't pay all the much for that emachine
