Ripping DVDs, best format?

I just got InterVideo DVD copy platinum 5, and together with DVD Decrypter I'm ripping DVDs left and right, but when I go to rip the DVD into a single video file, I get a hundred format choices, I see WMV-HD, Divx, Divx(avi), 3GPP, MP4, H.264, Mpeg-1 and 2, WMV, and Wav, can someone explain these diffferent formats to me and what are some good choices? thanks!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_codecs is a good place to start. H.264 is probably the smallest, Xvid (open source) or Divx probably the most widely used, MPEG2 is the most 'accurate' (because that's what was on the DVD to begin with) it really depends on what you'd like to do with them. VideoHelp.com is probably the best place to get your questions answered.

H.265 is better than h.264 i think it is 1/5 the size that would be about 1 gb per dvd, al thoe I am not sure what software does h.265

/edit

I saw this one review that this person put hd content on a dvd it was 25 h.264 to 5 gb h.265 he was puting his content on dvd's since he did not want to buy a blu-ray drive, he had a dvd player that suported h.265.
