Internal wireless slow..help!

I have a PROSet/Wireless 3945ABG, and I cannot download anything >6mb, and it starts d/ling at 20kb/s then drops. I tried to update a game file that was 200mb that used bittorrent protocol and it d/l at 300k (my actual limit). Why is my browsing the net and d/l off the net soo slow, but p2p works fine?

Win XP Pro SP2
latest drivers 11.1

probably some the bitorrent is eating up the bandwith. plus I dont really rely to much on wireless even I have one in my sager laptop. I use the regular wired connection, no lag and limited cap on bandwith. With a wired connection I got 100% speed compared tp intels wifi 50/50.

I tested them separatly, making sure nothing else was running. Any other ideas?

If you have any bit torrent client open while web browsing(even the lite utornent) you will see huge speed decreases in other areas such as web browsing, even if you are not reaching your bandwidth caps.
Further info would help explain this matter. Does the same issue happen when connected to a different wi-fi network? Or does it also happen when using a wired connection? trying different configs may help to isolate the problem if there is one. But if you have seen normal speeds under usage(esp in other areas) the problem may lie with you ISP and especially if you a using a specific port range or static IP for torrent downloading.

I think im confusing everyone. I made sure no bitorrent or p2p program was running when I view webpages or when I d/l off websites. For example when I d/l firefox it took 10 mins and 3 tries to finish it. Took 22 mins to d/l a firewall...10mb... I tried it on 2 other networks, same results. Hardwire did work fine tho, so I know its Intels wireless adapter, the nic is made by a diff company. This is worse than dial-up lol. Any other ideas?

Normally I would just say you have a faulty wireless card and it should be returned. However, you stated that you are seeing normal speeds in some p2p and bit torrent(steam?) clients, so this means it has to be some other internal software or other issue. However, without proper testing it is hard to tell and could be any number of things. Firewalls, conflicting or improper drivers(happens a lot with Intel pro), or even improper windows/port settings(did you block something by accident when prompted?) Anyway, if you seeing decent speeds at all it probably isn't a hardware issue. My guess, is the only thing that may solve this is a full reformat unless you can locate the issue.

Yeah i'm with you, I dont think its a hardware issue either. The bitorrent protocol I was using was World of warcraft. As for a reformat, I just installed the OS. Do it again? I made sure no firewalls were on and m$'s was disabled, so ports where fine. I downgraded drivers, and it seems to be better now. Still slow though.

You might try downloading Tcpoptimizer and running it. I have had it make little difference in some instances and huge differences in others.

Nice name by the way:-)

Ack! That thing sucks lol. I clicked Optimize, and applied it. Said I have to reboot, well I have 3 bsd's 5 random restarts right as it booted. It booted fine the last time though. I think it did help a little though, only took me 20 mins to d/l Adobe reader, which is 21mb. I got it working fine at my friends house. I used old drivers. I dont understand why its not working at my home, everyone else's works here. I can only d/l about 20-30kb.

If you could get your hands on a usb or pc card wifi just to see. My guess is hardware. I suspect its RMA. Maybe you will decide to just use a card.

Have you tried Firefox or an ftp client? Strange that your bittorrent runs well. It is possible that you have a virus/trojan. Even though you have a new setup, it can happen fast. It can suck up your bandwidth.

I have not seen Windows cause this in any version (never used ME or Vista). It either works or not. You said it is a new install. Does that mean you did it ... so how did it run before?

All I use is Firefox. I did try IE just to see if there was a diff, and it acted the same way. I scanned for virus, malware, spyware, adware, rootkits, etc.

I ordered my laptop w/o an OS. Im not paying M$ another $300. Could my wifi adapter not like the router? Its an Intel also. My laptop runs fine on everyone elses wireless but mine. I had 3 friends come over w/there pcs and all worked fine. Just gets old not being able to view things like large pics, videos(like youtube) etc.

Seems obvious, it is the router for you.

Intel should just stick to cpu's and mobo's. Looking at other boards intel has alot of issues w/their internal wireless adapters. Just lame.

My wife has a Dell and the internal works well, and on board stuff is handy when it works. It is especially bothersome when new things have problems. The good news is pc cards work great so you are not dead ended. Maybe you will be lucky and a different router will do the job. Routers are fairly cheap and they don't always last forever, so replacement is not uncommon.

This Linksys gets good reviews. I have its cheaper brother with worse reviews and it has been flawless. But I would get the GL version in the link for a little more money. It never hurts to have an extra router lying around anyway for occasions just like this. I had a D-Link that was wonderful for a long time but suddenly started to act up and I grabbed the Linksys I had lying around. I have a Belkin Pre-N in one location that I swear by and another at home that doesn't work well because of the walls it has to penetrate so I use the Linksys with an extra access point. It's a trial and error deal.

Good Luck

LOL I had same idea. I tried 2 different routers, netgear and d-link. Neither worked. So I went back over to my friends house and my wireless isnt working there now. =( It worked last week. Now its just slow. So im going external. End my frustration. thanks for the ideas guys! Appreciate it.

Goto device manager and chec your Intel Wireless card driver version. Goto the Intel site and find the driver for you card. I did this and found a newer driver than than the one at Acer site. I downloaded and installed and went from allways a good connection to allways excellent.
