New computer (lol emachines) vista runs slow as hell

Thread Starter
alright, no this is not my computer, but it is one of the family desktops. A brand new eMachine T5088 was purchased yesterday and it has:
P4 HT 631 or 641 i don't remember 3.2GHz
512MB DDR2
160GB HDD
GMA 950

Sooo, I have used the Vista beta before and I thought it ran OK on 1GB for all of my computers. It runs like crap on this new one! This is the first computer I have had experience with with full blown vista. i uninstalled all of the crap that was one there (lots of games, ebay/napster/google/aol stuff) and the only thing I left was the McAfee AV as it needs it and I get it for free from Comcast.

It went slow as hell the first few boots because it installed updates and virus updates and after rebooting again, it is still slow! web pages take long to load, the HDD seems to always be doing something when idle ..

I am assuming, but asking you people with vista experience, would adding another 512MB of ram help a lot? I would think this computer would not have a problem other than the ram. i know that the graphics uses 32MB and in task manager, it is using 399MB of ram doing nothing lol.

aero is obviously not on.

so, more ram will speed it up?
thx

yeah adding RAM should help a lot. you're really pushing it in that tiny 512MB of space

Vista is a ram hog, i would say 1.5GB just to get it to run decently, i had 1GB in my desktop, ran okay, threw in 1.5GB ram (now 2.5GB) and it runs like a dream!

Hi guys,
this vista sucks...
I purchased a new sony viao fz445 with 3 GB RAM thinking it will work like my Dream machine...
But to my surprise it runs like a snail pace...
especially with web browser pages...it really irritates me a lot ..
I have a anti-virus app from sympatico security manager from Bell telecom, canada
This does the clean up job ...
Any suggestions to speed up my sony and run fast if not with a supersonic speed?

Have fun
Ram

If it's mainly internet speeds, make sure you've got the latest ethernet drivers for your setup, and make sure you don't have firewall issues slowing you down. Might want to contact your ISP to make sure you've got everything optimized.

remove programs you dont use

get more ram, ram is cheap, go with 2gb at least, 4gb if you can

be sure you have a 7200rpm hdd, if laptop 5400 will be find, 16mb cache at the least

if onboard video, go into bios and bump up the mb of ram used by the max allowed

set your page file to system managed

dont use all the wigets unless you have a ton of ram and a very good dual core proc (takes asston of resources to use)

go to control panel, system, advanced, preformence, settings, then be sure to unclick everything aside from use visual styles

if you have more than 37 processes running, id say get into task manager and find out whats running that does not need to
i have 28 on windows xp atm

thats what i do for all the laptops i own, yet to have a problem with any OS

oh and get mozilla.......mozilla does not lock up neeeear as much as IE7
