For anyone considering XP over Vista read here....

DO IT. Vista in its current form is a joke filled with problem after problem. After getting fed up with Vista's butchering of my wireless connection, i installed XP today. Well omg, what a different. So much quicker, so much nicer. No more compatibility issues, nothing.

In fact, what a performance gain! I went from a 3dmark06 of 3850 on vista to 4200 even on XP. Thats a 350 point gain in 3dmark just from switching OS's. I havnt even tuned this one yet, so who knows.

Vista looks sexy, and I'm shallow.

Thats how i felt too, but once you get over the shiney see through glass effect. vista isnt much more then a reskinned XP. I through on the Xenomorph alienguise thing, and imo, it looks 10x better then vista does. Besides, the performance gain more then makes up for it in every way.

I still just don't understand how Vista makes it so much worse.. i've heard of SLi problems, but i don't have/need SLi.

Anyway, I only plan on playing WoW, and the occasional game which are generally from a few years ago, so I'm thinking Vista will be fine (for me).

FYI. In regards to WoW, I was getting 60fps constant with max settings in XP and since I upgraded to Vista I'm lucky to stay at 20fps. I don't know what the problem is, but I'll be going back to xp this week. On top of the bad performance in WoW, it seems like it takes forever just to move around the OS. The sad thing is that when I run the performance tools that come with Vista it tells me everything is just fine...sigh.

Well isn't this thread a crock full of sh*t.

Yes Vista is slower than XP if you don't have more than 1GB RAM. Yes gaming is slower due to driver issues. But program incompatibilities are few and far between. If you want to bitch and whine, prove it, list the programs you are using (except games) that are failing under Vista.

And screwing up your wireless network? Never heard of that one, and never had problems on multitude of wireless networks on my laptop.

Anyone who plays games should have stayed on XP... that is common sense right? You move over to Vista when the drivers become useable/mature, and obviously VGA drivers are not up to par with XP performance.

Basically what you said doesn't apply to most people (who DON'T play games).

Force, I've heard Vista is really buggy, even doing normal stuff. Have you read reviews, or have you seen comments from hardware sites, review sites (ones that don't play games)? The comments aren't positive I'll tell you that...

I've been using Vista since before it came out to the public... (MSDNAA from school)

i donno why microsoft release vista at this stage
i think it still immature enough to be used as a single operating system
for me i use bot vista & XP

I still use Windows 2000 professional (unofficial sp5) over xp lol. I'm actually going to install windows xp on my laptop tonight, though. I have Vista on my desktop pc and it runs pretty smoothly for most parts, but its kind of a little buggy and a pain when you have multiple applications up and running at the same time.

I should have mentioned im on the m9700, and this was a post for people on the m9700. if you arnt using your m9700 for gaming, then you just wasted your money. And as already stated XP > Vista for gaming.

Also its nice to see other people know what the hell i was talking about. I know you guys think vista is so great bc its nice and shiney, but understand is a slew of problems that arnt exactly aparent on the surface.

Have you taken a look as your processes while trying to play music? All the services vista has running eats up processer performance like crazy. The mpmp and media networking sharing service for examples.

@whoever about WoW. I had the same experience. I gained dramatic frame rate improvements going to XP from Vista.

Not even considering moving to Vista from XP on my m9700 - maybe later when others work out all the bugs
post #14 of 41
I guess I'd opt for XP if it was offered on the m5790, but I'll just go with Vista and wait it out.. I'm not too bummed if I have to lower some things to get games to run well.. and to mam4983, what are you running WoW on..? I could get a steady 40-60 FPS on my 2 year old laptop.. and it wasn't so great, so I DOUBT Vista will hold back a brand new m5790, and I'm expecting similar or better frame rates, honestly.

Exactly! I'll move to Vista when MS can give me a REALLY good reason. That day may come, but nothing on the horizon so far.

I know hulioni and some folks have had good luck with Vista (they are also much more technically competent than I am), but I sit here daily listening to my husband curse as he works with Vista on his notebook and desktop(s). He's managed to get everything networked, and wireless works fine, but every once it a while he hits a snag and ****let's just say, the little ones would be covering their ears**** (as it is, the dogs are used to it!).

Apparently, they're getting back into that rhythm of a new OS every two-three years like with 95/98, etc. So I dunno what that would mean for all y'all waiting to upgrade.

Yeah I'm not trying to start an arguement or anything but I'm glad Apple has seen what M$ did wrong. I'm glad Apple is delaying Leopard till October. Better to have a quality product and wait longer, then have a rushed product earlier...

It's always been good practice to give Microsoft a good year or so after a major OS release before converting to it, even more so considering Vista is 80% completely new code. (2000/XP were both just 'enhanced' versions of Windows NT.)

In fact, I'd suggest it's good practice for any OS that you may be going to load on a PC.

In the PC world, where nothing is uniform; where there are 1000's of vendors, 1000's of drivers, and therefore 1000's of possible 'break points,' it's not all that surprising when these new OS's cause some of the problems that people have been reporting.

It's like any software really - staying on the bleeding edge is always more likely to cause problems than not. (I work for a large international corporate with 50,000+ employees, and we still use Office 2000 - only just now moving to Office 2003!)

Don't fix it if it ain't broke?

I'm still unsure where I fall in all this. I like Vista, and from limited experience, it works fine, so I'm gonna get it and stick it out.
