Sager 9860 - Ubuntu 7.04 - No Sound

EDIT: Fixed sound problem by removing the modem. Luckily the modem is removable
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really need someone with Sager 9860 (D900T) that got the sound working. I had sound working on Ubuntu 5.10 using OSS. But none of the other Ubuntu versions have worked. In the last year, I have tried at least 7 different Linux distros and sound does not work on any of them. But since it worked on 5.10 it must be possible to get it working on 7.04.

I tried lots of different things in the Ubuntu forums as well as others. Using this as a guide,

I tried changing the alsa version but that does not work either. I've done so much stuff that I'll need to reinstall again. So I hope someone with a 9860 got the sound working or at least got any Linux distro to work.

There's actually a sticky for the 9860 in this forum:

What distros have you tried? If you haven't tried Ubuntu or PCLinuxOS I would give them a shot as they have very good hardware support. That thread above has instructions for getting audio working, but it is for Fedora Core 3 (very old).

The thread is too old and I don't think anyone is paying attention to it. The problems with sound in Ubuntu started with 6.04. I have tried OpenSuse 10.2 Sabayon 3.3 (Live DVD only - does not recognize Promise Controller) Mandriva version ? - screwed up my boot loader so bad will never use again) Red Hat version ? I have downloaded Mepis and will try PCLixus, Gentoo and maybe so others. But I really don't won't to mess around with it anymore if no one knows how to get the sound to work in a Resent Linux Distro for the 9860.

I haven't touched Linux ever since my 9860's internal DVD drive stopped working. However, I had ALSA sound working with Gentoo back with kernel 2.6.13 using the in kernel ALSA drivers (you can't use OSS anymore). I've been loosely following development since then and have noticed that ALSA did something with later ALSA versions that required certain compilation options to be set for specific Intel HDA sound chips. Not sure how that change affected the in-kernel ALSA branch, if at all. Assuming you've tried to get it working with in-kernel ALSA and failed... have you tried scanning the ALSA docs (or kernel docs for ALSA?) to figure out what ALSA compilation options the alsa-driver module requires for the ALC880?

I tried several different Driver/Utils/ etc and recompiled but none worked. I finally gave up and will keep checking to see if a new technique that sounds promising. I even tried Kubuntu but there is a lot less support for it. If this was brand new laptop, I would delve into the documentation but I don't know how much longer my 9860 will last. I will just wait for Ubuntu 7.10 and see if it is fixed. I also am unsuccessful at getting sound to work on Vista.

Fixed sound problem by removing the modem. Luckily the modem is removeable. Since this is fixed, this thread can be closed.
