Is AMD back?

Looks like AMD's upcoming processors are going to bring balance back to the force (I'll let you decide who's the dark side).

I think everyone would agree that similarly performing CPU's from both Intel and AMD is the best situation for us consumers. I really don't want to go back to paying $350 for a mid range processor.

Without further adieu:

We'll have to wait and see if the Turion64s make out just as well. I'd love to see some ultra cheap laptops with these chips.

As much as I'm an AMD fanboy I think Intel will have the upper hand for a while, this includes the next generation as well.

If it's any indication of what we can expect: as we stand right now Intel is shooting for 45nm by q1 2008 and has already won 65nm this gen; AMD is not.

With the price cuts AMD is cannobolizing itself before Intel does it for them (which is a recommended move). Their cash reserves however are not looking good compared to Intel's nearly unlimited cash flow.

It looks like AMD will take the crown back, for a little while at least. Intel has no plans to make dramatic changes to their core... packing size has not meant too much over the past few years in the processor wars either. AMD had better thermal performance and better overall performance with the larger packaging up until the Core2's appeared. We'll have to see how quickly the quadcore chips become mainstream because that's one area where Intel may have an advantage.

I'm not sure what to think yet, but 2007/2008 should be very competitive.

Why wouldn't you compare it to AMD quad core chip?

The biggest problem for AMD is they have a huge debt. Cutting prices to compete with Intel is only making things worse. If AMD can't cut there debt in the next 2 years it may force them to spin off ATI.
