Question regarding service partition on IBM's notebooks

Hi,

Just wondering, lets say a virus penetrates a system.. How secure is the service partition on that system?

Can a virus cause any damage to this partition?

From my understanding, I don't think so. I have a Z61m for work, and I ran into a corrupt file from a co-worker. I hit the ThinkVantage Button, and everything was as good as new. There wasn't any hint of corruption afterwards...

Unless you contract a MBR/Boot sector virus (very rare these days that partition will remain safe. Is it a standard partition or a HPA? (Host Protected Area)

Well like I said before MBR/bootsector virus are very rare these days. Are you running AV/firewall?

Yes. It's a company laptop, so we are protected by Symantec, and we have a Watchgurad Firebox so nothing usually gets through from the outside, unless somebody brings in a corrupt file from home, which has happened on ocasion...
