AMD Turion 64-bit vs. Inel Core2Duo

What is the general opinion on this issue? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each one?

hands down get the C2D if you can......no contest.

The Core 2 Duo is more powerful than the Turion, but it depends on the tasks you plan on doing with it.

If they are simple tasks or any non gaming, non encoding-decoding task you would not notice a difference.

Another factor to consider is that the AMD's can usually be had for a little cheaper than the Intels and thats a plus.

The Turion processors do a pretty good job, but Core 2 Duo is much better for multi-tasking, and probably faster for some other apps as well. WRT gaming, a higher end Turion works fine with strong video cards. It may be that the Turion also runs a bit cooler ... but this will depend upon the system.

That said, definitely go for a Core 2 Duo if you're looking at a new notebook.

The C2D are going to be quite a bit more powerful than the Turion X2 procs...

Just an example...My proc @2.8Ghz pulls 26,000 Dhrystones score vs the most powerful X2 that pulls 20,000 (FX2-62DC) 2.8GHz

http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2856

Scroll down to 6... You will see the T7200 2.0GHz vs the FX-60 2.0 GHz...

The FX-60 does not meet or beat the C2D on any bench.

...Browsing the internet..writing emails...etc you are not going to see a difference in performance.

Ok. I was basically trying to do a Dell XPS M1710 vs. Alienware Aurora M9700 and wanted to see the difference in processors.
But if the C2D is so obviously superious, why does Alienware choose to go with Turion for its flagship notebooks?

#1. It's still a powerful processor. It's not weak by any means
ML44- 2.4GHz (17,335 Dhrystone)-Highest proc offered in the m9700
T7600-2.33GHz (21,080 Dhrystone)-2nd Highest proc offered on the M1710 (T7600G is highest)

@2.83GHz on my T7600G I pull (26,051 Dhrystones)
@3.0GHz (27,544)

#2. It's less expensive

If there are any other reasons the AW folks will have to chip in since I don't own one.

Core 2 Duo is more powerful and efficient.

To satisfy the demands of rabid fanboys everywhere. Dell fills the need for Intel fans and Alienware fills the need for AMD fans.

I agree. There's no real reason to include an AMD processor in a gaming/performance computer nowadays.

Having said that, the reason many manufactures seem to include AMD Turions rather then faster, more efficient core 2's is because the Turion is simply cheaper. Being unable to outperform the C2D, AMD focuses on undercutting intel in its lower (and mid) range of cpu's. Evidently its doing that reasonably successfully, judging by the amount of Turions I see in Medion's and other cheap laptop brands.

the 2.4 Turion in the AW 9700 is going to do everything you want it to......if the machine is going to be mainly for gaming then you will be fine with either notebook.

But if you want the best of both worlds, wait for the AW 9750 to come out.....it will have C2D and 2 x 7950go in SLI, should spank the pants off of both the M1710 and the current AW 9700.

yep that M9750 is going to be one nice laptop.

The Turion is a fine "middle of the road" processor The C2D provides considerably more performance... AMD needs to get itself in gear...

Dell XPS m1710 vs. Alienware m9700
Dell XPS m1710 all the way
Dell XPS m1710 vs. Alienware m9750
Alienware Aurora m9750 all the way
You can order a m9750 right now, but the estimated shipping date is late May I think, so if you can wait a little bit then m9750.
