Help me in buying a Laptop online.

I found a nice Alienware laptop on ebay and I noticed the guy said in his listing that you should email him for a buy it now price. I sent him the email and he said he would stop the auction and sell it to me for 700 bucks. This laptop is fully loaded. Athlon X2 4200+ with a 7800gtx Aurora m7700. For 700 it is a feaking steal. My problem is I don't know how to send him the money and for it to be secure. He says he is going to pack the laptop up today, take pictures of it packed up, then he is going to go ahead and ship it out, then send me the pics and the tracking number showing that it has been shipped. He then wants me to send him a payment via wired, money order, ect. I talked to the guy on the phone, sounds about my age (about 23) and seems pretty kool. He had good feedback on ebay but only been on ebay for about a month. He lives right in PA. What should I do? What is the safest way to make this payment? Thanks.

hmm, thats a thorny one. generally its advisable to keep these sorta things within ebay: the fact that he's willing to do a sale outside of ebay and possibly send the item before payment sounds kinda sus to me. but on the otherhand he could just be genuinely trying to avoid giving a cut of his sale price to ebay & paypal and maximise his profits.

i would say the best thing to do is go and post the same question on the ebay community forums, alot of helpful experienced ebayers there and they generally answer quite quickly.

scammer, obviously...

first of all, you cant buy a fully loaded x2 4200+ with 7800gtx for $700 unless there is something seriously wrong or the seller needs money urgently.

he is asking you to send money via money order or wired payment? do you know you have absolutely no protection when you do it that way?
he will tell you he shipped the item...but all he will ship is an empty box and you cant do anything since he never stated what he was selling.

only stick to paypal and onlypay with credit card so in case of fraud, you can easily get your money back by calling ur bank and explaining the situatuation

it does seem a bit suspicious. you could get a money order for the amount, then send a photocopy of it and wait until you get the package before sending the actual money order. that way, if you did only receive an empty box, you still have your money, but the downside is that when the other person gets the photocopy and they in fact did send you a laptop, they might think you're the scammer, but who knows.

Well he shipped the laptop today. According to the tracking number it weighs 12 lbs. I'd say that is pretty close to the weight. Just to be safe though, I will open the package infront of the fedex driver and if it is not a laptop I'll have him take note of that. If it is, I'll wire the money to the guy on Friday. Crossing my fingers. Let you all know the out come. Thanks for your help.

If hes genuine he will allow you to wait.

If he isn't he'll push for the money

Turns out he was a scam. He sent me a gallon of antifreeze. Good thing I didn't send him anything in return =D. Watch out for the guy, he goes by the name of John and ebay ID jschwartz22. Here is all of his info:

Well, Im not suprised.

Anyone trying to sell outside of ebay is probably a scam. Anyway, report to ebay

Was there even a doubt? I mean seriously, are you that naive? Hate to say it, but told you so.

Why do people feel the need to cut deals outside of ebay when scammers are a dime a dozen? I'm talking from a buyer's perspective here.
