Recently my Toshiba has been randomly turning off all of a sudden. This happens usually when it is under extreme conditions, photoshop, bridge, illustrator, itunes all running with a lot open in each, or when I am playing some Civilization IV for around an hour or so. I think it is due to overheating maybe? Maybe my gpu is getting just a little too hot? If anyone could help me out with this problem that would be great. As we speak I am running some tests, such as 3dmarks05 and nvidia ntune test to see if I am at least up to par with everyone. Thanks in advance!!

Has it been cleaned recently ie blowing the dust/hair out of the fan/vents. Try some canned air. Make sure you stick the end of a paperclip into one of the fan vent holes and keep the fan from spinning. if not, it could overspin and damage the fan. Also, are you using the laptop on a desk or hard surface rather than on your lap/soft surface, the vent holes could be plugged if not.

Nope the desk is fine. The bottom of the laptop has very small nubs (feet) which allows some air to pass underneath. If you have it on a soft surface ie. a bed, your lap etc, the bottom of the laptop is usuallycovered and the vent holes are not able to allow hot air to vent. Just a side note, the only proper way to really clean it out, is to disassemble. I took mine to an Authorizied Toshiba Repair center and dropped it off for two days and they thoroughly cleaned it out for about $40 Cdn. Cheap maintainance far as I am concerned. I'll do that once a year with canned air blowing in between

Hey thanks for the tips. I will try cleaning the fan out with compressed can air. Also, I am misunderstanding on what surfice I should be using my laptop on. I have a wooden desk that is usually stays on. Should I set it ontop of some other surface? Thanks again.

If it is under warranty, you would not want to disassemble it or the warranty will be void. If under warranty, bite the bullet and take it into an authorized Toshiba repair service and let them clean it for about 40 bucks. Next time around when the warranty expires, use the link from the first post on the "Peer to peer" side called "How to disassemble Toshiba laptops"
